What is a good reference for learning how to use photoshop? I just got it, but (to me) it isn't very user friendly. Photofiltre was easy to pick up,. I got Gimp and CS3 today and am trying to figure them out.
I still can't even figure out how to cut and paste on photoshop. About to go to Barnes and Nobles for shopping so may just pick up a book.

I rarely use Photoshop and am still learning CS3 myself. Ask Big Easy and a few others about it. As far as Gimp goes, I used gimptalk.org to learn it and then just fooled around until I got the hang of it. I still learn stuff everyday on it. Youtube has some good tutorials on CS3 and Gimp. One photoshop tut I like is this... LINK the guy is pretty funny and it actually has some good tips in it too.

It depends on what you want to do with it. I use Photoshop mainly to work with pictures I've taken with my digital camera. A friend gave me Photoshop CS for Digital Photographers and Photoshop CS Down & Dirty Tricks. They walk you through the basics of how to clean up red-eye, how to use the tools to clean up pics, etc.
I also have Photoshop CS Bible. It is a huge mf'n book - probably twice the size of the other two put together. I have used it a few times, and it covers pretty much how to use everything in the program.

There are several ways to do cutouts but I find using the pen tool is the easiest.
