This season should be a lesson. Obviously we have other serious issues to worry about but hypothetically speaking, do the schedule defenders realize that if we had won the SEC championship at 12-1, we would have virtually no shot at the title game with the OOC teams we played?

Hell, it's being tossed around (though I don't think it will happen) that it is possible Fla could get squeezed out even if they win...and they played Fla St and Miami. At any rate, if is even being rumored about UF, you can be assured, we'd have no chance.

Point being, the "SEC is tough enough" argument while true most years, is no guarantee, and since you never know when it will be down, isn't it worth the risk to schedule decent...doesn't have to be great...just decent OOC opponents?

The flip side of that is if we scheduled one decent OOC opponent from a major conference, we are 6-6 and possibly missing a bowl game.

people really defended our ooc schedule this year?? HOW!!
other than Va Tech when was the last BIG ooc game.
I can't stand ohio st. but no one can say they are scared. Texas home and home then USC home and home?? That's an OOC schedule

Well true, but I'm talking hypothetically. The defenders said essentially all we needed to do was win the SEC and we'd be in. They'd have been wrong.

Our OOC schedule needs to be upgraded. It would be the coolest thing if we would play at least one top notch OOC team every year.

If we went undefeated like Alabama, with our schedule, we would be in. Don't lose, it's generally not a problem.

To be fair though, LSU's SEC schedule was significantly harder than Bama's or Florida's, making up for the 1 better OOC game those two played

They didn't, there was a 10 page thread in August about how pissed everyone was that the OOC schedule was crap.

If it makes you feel better, SC had an awesome OOC schedule, which we swept, and it still wasn't enough to be even in National Title consideration.

Honestly, what this year has shown us is that teams need to schedule OOC cupcakes to make sure they're 3-0, thus making sure they're ranked heading into conference play. And if you lose, lose late, because now losing early means people will talk about your loss all year, not pay attention to how your team is actually playing, and never even consider your team for the NCG.

Nah, I'm not bitter at all.

You're joking, right?

Even with the weak OCC schedule, if LSU were to have been denied after playing UF, SC, Bama and UG, they're just fricking morons. Same with UF, and their loss was to Ole Miss, not a major player as far as the national scene is.

Why does USC get to be propped up playing WHAT WAS ONCE a good OOC schedule while playing in conference chumps.

For the football impaired:

IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT THE QUALITY OF THE OCC SCHEDULE IS, AS LONG AS A TEAM PLAYS QUALITY OPPONENTS, AND SEC SCHOOLS PLAY MORE THAN ANYONE.

Don't believe me? Look at the rankings. Thaqt'a all that really shuld matter when it comes to "quality of schedule."

I think they want SEC schools to be beaten down with week in - week out top notch opponents while other, more profitable teams roll over pussy conference teams in between powder puff opponents.

frick 'em.

Right after we get this coaching staff debacle fixed the Rant needs to turn its attention to upgrading the OOC schedule (and then to purging TS from piped-in music).

No, I'm not.

Tell it to the BCS. Like I said originally, if there is even a remote possibility of UF being denied, when they played and beat two BCS conference opponents, what makes you think we'd have any chance with the shite we played?

wait, you're saying beating VT didn't matter last year? we don't get to the title game without it. and also, did you miss 2004 AU not getting in?

SEC SCHOOLS PLAY MORE THAN ANYONE.

Typically, but not this year. You're not seriously throwing SC in with UF and Bama are you?

That's definitely not what I was suggesting...decent opponents, a couple from BCS conferences preferably. Doesn't have to be juggernauts.

The good thing about playing a good OOC team is it also gets you ready for SEC play.

The chances of us going undefeated are virtually zip so we need to have a good OOC game scheduled every year.

one thing that bothers me about miles, he likes the Hayden Fry approach and prefers creampuffs.

Exactly, especially considering we haven't done so in 50 years. Not exactly the sort of thing you want to bet the farm while scheduling 4 cupcakes.

I'm always for playing good OOC games and certainly better than the crap we played this year, but most teams don't play more that 5, maybe 6 good games regardless and at the begin of the year its looked like we'd have 5 counting the SEC CG. As it turned out, if we were 11-1 playing UF, you are right there is a good chance at us being left out for OU-UT.

Right...and that's what I mean. I would have assumed the same, but it happened in 04 and now 08 where the conference was a bit down. And in 04, it wasn't as down as it is now and Auburn STILL got left out.

LSU's opener against Washington will be their first scheduled, OOC road game against a BCS school since September 6, 2003 @ Arizona.

Every other SEC team played one THIS YEAR, with the exception of Alabama playing a neutral field game against what was supposed to be a top-10 opponent.

Something to chew on.
