I got in a discussion with a friend about how I cannot remember LSU landing a 5-star LB out of high school and it led me to check out our previous classes per Rivals. I did not like what I saw. In 2005 we had a very small class (13) as we were in a coaching transition during the peak period of recruiting season and the only LB we landed was Beckwith (4 stars). In 2006 we had a solid class (#7) with 26 commits of which 4 were LBs...Cutrera (3-star), Odom (4 stars), Riley (3 stars), and Sheppard (3 stars). In 2007 we had another solid class (#4) with 26 commits but without a single LB. In 2008 we had class ranked 11th of which 2 were LBs...Baker (4 stars) and Prater (3 stars). So in a nutshell, we only signed 7 LBs in a period of 4 recruiting classes. Of those, none were 5-star, three were 4-star (Bechwith is leaving, Baker is VERY promising, and Odom leaves a lot to be desired), and the rest were 3-star. That means that not only are we very thin at LB but we are also relying heavily on lightly recruited LBs.

Now I know there are definite exceptions to the star rankings and there are quite a few 5-star busts and 2- or 3-star gems. But I think that as a whole over a period of time the star system is pretty good at evalutating talent.

I started this with the intent of seeing who our highest rated LB recruits had been over the past few years but instead became alarmed at the lack of depth and quality we have come to rely on due to recent recruiting failures at the position. This leads me to a conclusion that we need to address this IMMEDIATELY. IMO, getting a defensive coach that can recruit AND coach LBs should be a priority. And getting LBs ASAP should also be a priority. I think getting Barkevious Mingo is a must this year as we only have two LBs committed for the class of 2009 (a 4-star and a 3-star). The guys we have are OK to good but they are not superstars. We need gamebreakers.

I always knew we had problems recruiting LBs as compared to various other positions in which we regularly get top recruits. I just didn't know it was this alarming. Thought I would share.

So LB recruits...get your butts over here because we need you!

For some reason, great Linebackers do not want to come to LSU. Brady James was the last great one. Maybe Chavis can change the trend.

We'll sing a few this year:

Kevin Minter 4*
Lamin Barrow 3*

Possibly Jonathan Stewart 4*

Getting kicked off the team should keep Odom from making much of an impact.

Ah yes. Add Mingo to the list. He's a 4*.
So we'll end up probably with (3) 4* and (1) 3*.

Mingo and Minter will be very solid players. Not sure about Barrow or Stewart (who is an A and M commit, but if we offer...)

Couldn't help but notice that Riley had only 3 stars and he played a solid game against Arkansas and all year in my opinion.

I don't care how many stars a recruit comes in with. I only care how many W's they help us get and this year you'd have to say our LB's as a whole were disappointing.

we need middle linebackers BADLY...i think we'll be ok on the outside but hopefully we'll get a stud ILB and not have to worry about converting one of the outside guys to inside

Is the lack of talent at LB just becoming obvious to the Rantards? Maybe it is not all coaching? Bradie James has been gone how long? LSU last had a high level LB drafted when? Hell, look at OU. Curtis Lofton left a year early, was a second round pick, and has played well for the Falcons. His backup played well early on and was hurt and out for the season during the TX game. His backup played well and has missed parts of games, but they still tackle well at the position. I personally believe LSU is deficient at LB, don't care who is coaching them.

You really don't know what you are talking about. LSU has had better linebackers than half of the SEC and we don't ever have good LBs come out of Louisiana. Seeing as how our Dline is stacked and our DBs, though young, are one of the most deep and talented groups in the SEC, shows that we have recruited very well on defense. It is hard to scout LB's, therefore rivals doesn't grade them very accurately.

this might have been mentioned but one huge reason why recruiting of linebackers has been bad is because Louisiana hasnt produced many good ones lately

we've been forced to look to places like florida and georgia for linebackers but its hard as hell to pull them out of those areas with all the other big time programs on them as well

to go up against florida right now for linebackers with the way their d and linebackers are playing is almost unfair, Ill take their leftovers though but even he might go elsewhere

I am of the opinion that, while the south produces outstanding offensive linemen and linebackers, the numbers are nowhere near comparable to our RBs, DBs, WRs and ATHs. This has led, partially, to the trend you described. Further, while the south gets a pass in some areas, the linebackers that are developed in the region (outside of Florida) are not given the recognition they deserve by the national recruiting services (as a general rule).
