Why don't guys like Ryan Baker see the field (except ST)? He plays with high energy and brings a hit, and is a guy that could lift a defense that is struggling. Just have a few packages that let him play without learning the entire playbook, which is an entirely different topic.

We seem to have about four LBs that play and that is it.

Acutally, we have 4 that see the field. We really have one that truly plays.

He will be in the very near future but right now he is not as good as the linebackers ahead of him. But he will be better.

Because those are the starters

Baker's size is going to be a big question mark in the future...it was a question mark coming out of high school and now I see why. The guy is definitely under sized.

Hey Lynxcat I agree they are the starters, but give them a spell on those long drives, or when they are banged up (like Sheppard). I think Baker and the safety from FL (no. 37) should play more on D.

I haven't been able to see him in person, but I'd say he's around 5'10 if hes listed at 6'0 by LSU.

fwiw i think he will have success, has natural ability and undersized lb have had success at both levels, his speed and big hits will put him over the top

I have seen him in person and he is 5'10 at best but a super humble young man. He really reminds me of Ali. He has good nose for the ball and brings the pain. I think with the way offenses are switching to a more scat back type of offenses, Ryan will excel.

I can agree with that. The issue is that Kelvin Sheppard/Perry Riley are constantly getting breaks because they switch with Chad Jones on just about every other play. If they were playing every single down, then I could understand your argument, but they get spelled enough by CJ to stay fresh 95% of the time (or should at least if conditioned well).

#37 is Karnell Hatcher. He was my "sleeper" from last year's recruiting class. However, even I am surprised with the amount of PT he has seen as a true freshman. He needs to add some weight, but he has been a sure tackler and has played very well when given the opportunity.

Thanks for the first hand height info.

I knew someone would bring the Ali comparison. I would actually say that Ryan Baker has more potential because he is faster than Ali. If he can get off blocks well (undersized so that becomes an issue), then I can see him being a very good WLB. I am very interested to see how he progresses over the next couple years.

No doubt that the guy loves to lay the wood.

I really agree with you. He seems to have the abilities to excel in the current "speed" game. I just hate to see our "potential" sit on the side while we are struggling defensively.

I have to differ with you on the "speed" of the game. He does a WONDERFUL job on kickoff returns, but he also does not have anything to worry about except staying in his lane and tackle the ball carrier.

When he has to worry about gap assignments, coverages, etc. the "freshman" comes out...

I would give him a VERY good chance at being the WLB starter next year.

When you play Florida you need speed linebackers not slow big ones.

Baker came in for one play yesterday when Sheppard got hurt. They blitzed him off the edge and he threw the RB about 3 feet out of his way. He didn't get to the QB, but he made a great play trying.

He is undersized, but he just seems like a playmaker. Never gives up and has a nose for the big play.

Who cares if he's undersized but can make plays. The NFL has had plenty of undersized pro bowlers. Sam Mills, Zach thomas, etc...

Baker kind of reminds me of a more athletic Sam Olajabutu out of Arkansas..

Sam was maybe 5'9 but he was as dynamic a linebacker as there was in the SEC because he was rangy and could flat out tackle.
