I have never played organized football, so this is a sincere question. Not criticizing...

On the drive when Ole Miss went down the field in 3 passes, I believe 2 of the 3 went to the man being covered by Patrick Peterson. He was face mask to face mask with him on both throws, and if he had been able to turn at the right time, it looked like he probably could have intercepted. Are defensive backs taught to look back at any time? Or is the fear that, if they do, the receiver will stop and they'll run over him and be called for pass interference? Or something else? Please enlighten me.

Thanks

I've never played organized football either, but from what I remember hearing, DBs are taught to use the WR's eyes as a mechanism for knowing when to try and get the ball. Something like that.

You'll probably want someone else to answer, though.

Peterson was playing near perfect coverage. He just didn't get his hand up to defend the pass when the receiver's hands went up. Honestly, those plays had less to do with Peterson, and more to do with a perfect throw and good concentration from the receiver.

Yeah I thought Peterson covered those plays very well. Snead just put those balls on the money.

They are absolutely taught to turn around and find the ball. Example, Chevis Jackson's INT in last yr's NC game. Once the receiver turns to find the ball or puts their arms out, the DB must turn and find the ball.

Yeah, it looked like he had perfect position (and he's a great player, I know), but the throws were perfect. It just seems like I see that a lot (not just with him), so I was curious....

Thanks

The passes were too good. Coverage was decent minus the first TD of the game.

Honestly, Peterson is rarely caught out of position. Scary how good he is being a freshman, running like a corner in a safety's body. He's got a bright future, without a doubt. And yes, it can be agreed upon, those plays were about Jevan Snead's throws rather than Peterson's position.

Agree, that one drive they really "earned" the TD by playing better than our defense, who did not play poorly those 3 plays. However, we gave them 14 pts two previous drives on two big plays(blown assignments)and that gives QBs confidence to make those kinds of throws.
