I was reading a feature on Chris Farley and was surprised to find out that he had been originally cast to voice Shrek. Apparently he did most, but not all of the voicework, and the studio had to decide whether to have someone impersonate him for the final lines, or hire a new actor. Mike Myers obviously filled in.

I wouldn't mind watching the Chris Farley version of Shrek, I wonder if it would have been equally successful as the Shrek series has been with Myers.

Someone should hack something and get that. Or they could just give it to us. Would be cool to see.

I personally think it would have been just as good or better with Farley.

I think it would've been a lot more heart-warming. Myers brought a lot of "cool" to the character, something that Farley couldn't do.

I would've been interested to see a Farley Shrek.

I think Farley might have taken the character too far over the top and the movie might not have been quite as good because of it.

Interestingly enough, it seemed to have been the opposite. The people involved were talking about how many of the readings were really heartfelt. There's a scene where Shrek is singing, it was intended to be funny, but everyone involved said Farley made it touching instead, and it worked. I would have assumed that Farley would have made Shrek full-throttle, but it seems that wasn't the case.

Interesting sidenote is that when Shrek does "finger quotes", that was based on Farley in real life.

This was all from a Playboy article in which they talked to a bunch of his closest friends, family and associates about what happened in his last days, sad stuff.

You can read more about it in a book written about him by his Brother Tom Farley and friend Tanner Colby called: The Chris Farley Show: A biography in 3 acts. It is very eye opening and sad.

The Chris Farley Shrek also had his type of hair, shaggy and parted to one side, but then they made Shrek bald when decided to use Mike Myers. My cousin was the Technical Director of Shrek and did a presentation last year in Slidell about the making of Shrek and showed some of the early stages of animation.

Unfortunately no, everything was from his laptop that he projected onto a screen...

Of course, back then, "Shrek" was supposed to have had a very different storyline. It wasn't a movie about an ogre who just wanted to be left alone in his swamp. But -- rather -- it was about a teenage ogre who wasn't all that eager to go into the family business. You see, young Shrek didn't really want to frighten people. He longed to make friends, help people. This ogre actually dreamed of becoming a knight.

quote:

Of course, now that Chris was gone, other changes would have to be made to this motion picture. First and foremost, the film's original Fiona -- "Saturday Night Live" vet Janeane Garafalo -- would have to be replaced. (Why for? Well, Janeane originally got this role in "Shrek" because it was thought that her somewhat abrasive, sarcastic comic persona would provide a perfect counterpoint to Chris Farley's sweet if somewhat dim take on Shrek. But -- with Chris dead & gone -- Garafalo's version of Fiona was now thought to be just too downbeat for the film. Which is why "Shrek" 's producers eventually cut Janeane loose and then offered this role to a much sunnier performer, Cameron Diaz).

Speaking of characters who died before they could play their last role, I'm sure most of you know that John Belushi was originally cast to be Bill Murray's character in Ghostbusters.
