I don't understand that rule. I know we got flagged for it, but on Dickson's touchdown, it looked like he got horse collared but not brought down. Kind of a nitpick rule...sometimes the only thing you can grab is the collar.

It's was the right call although the refs seem to be inconsistent in calling it throughout the NCAA.

It's pretty gay, but people have been getting rolled up for years from these tackles.

I've seen this happen to Trindon more than once...No call.

dickson did not come close to getting horse collared. he just had him around the neck. horse collar is when they dig their hands in the back of the shoulder pads and pull down. this rule is to prevent knee injuries.

Dickson wasn't horse collared, horse-collaring is grabbing the back of the shoulder pads (right under the neck), and pulling the player down by that.
My problem with the whole thing is that Beckwith didn't need to do it to take Garcia down, and secondly, I think that's the first time all year I've seen it called. And it was definitely warranted in other situations.

Yeah I'm no expert on NCAA rules but I think it's like the personal foul facemask....you have to use the jersey/back of shoulder pads to TACKLE the man...not just harass him.

The deal on Dickson should have been something though....late hit or something...it was uncalled for. Not to mention ball is dead in EZ when it's in a player's possession....so that made it late.

i think the difference was that the USC player was grabbed by the shoulder collar, whereas Dickson basically looked like the guy close-lined him without actually grabbing it

you have to use the jersey

just grabbing the back of the jersey doesn't count as a horse collar.

yes, and I think the person being brought downs knees have to hit the ground to be a horse collar right? Like if you have a hold of them like that you must let go when you both go down and cant keep driving them down...right?

Only if you use the back of the jersey to TACKLE the man (thus the all caps in my original post).

Something inside of me told me that when they made this a rule in the changes this past spring, I knew LSU would be the first team to be on the bad side of it. The other one is the sideline warning not being a warning again, and just giving a penalty. I bet we're the first to get called against that one too.

I think both are stupid, and aren't necessarily a problem in football. So, why make it a rule? You can tackle a player like that in the NFL, so why not NCAA? Hell, Reggie Bush is brought down every Sunday by a horsecollar tackle (a few times a game).

It was orginated in the NFL because of Roy Williams. The rule started there and has now been implemented in the NCAA.

Like I said, inconsistency amoung refs makes the rule hard to like.

It wasn't a horse collar on Dickson , but it sure looked like Dickson was about to beat his arse for doing it though Did you see the ref step in?

The rule came from the NFL. It is the Roy Williams rule. The player from Dallas tore several players knee up doing this

i like the rule and dont. if they called on a regular basis then it would be ok. On the other hand i do understand its football and guys are just trying to make plays and not trying to hurt someone. it happened to me and 2 knee surgeries later im ok. lol

Well technically it was the right call according to the new rule.
But I've watched so many games this year where they haven't called. (refs need to get more consistent about calling it or just not call it)

SC guys collar was a HOME collar; Dickson's was an AWAY collar.
