Sat in the stand with my dad as a toddler a few times.

1996 or so, I was 9 years old....Went to Coushatta with my dad for a 5 day bender of mountain dew, fruit rollups and deer hunting.

I was playing my gameboy, doe stepped out at about 100 yards. In my best Braveheart impression, I stood up and yelled "Deer, youre going down!", and fired the M1 carbine...swing and miss.

Bitch circles around for a second, comes back and gives me another shot, BAM - let the M1 sing, doe jumps and heads right. Got down and found blood, tracked to a huge briar thicket with no luck. My dad called all of his friends to come track that night, we looked endlessly with no luck

I still remember everything like it happened yesterday.

My uncle ran a pecan orchard in Monroe, LA where Century Telephone is now. One day his son, who was a fresh USMC boot at the time, was home on leave. He actually bought an AR in San Diego on his way home and we were shooting anything that moved in the pecan orchard behind OCS school. I got greenlighted on a spike while we were doing some recon or gathering intell (everything was Marine related in my family growing up). I think I was about 10. Not 100% sure it was even deer season.

Killed my first deer when I was 6 years old in Waterproof, LA in an area called the Glade Woods. We always left Thanksgiving day to hunt for a week. I thing the day after Thanksgiving my dad and I were in a ladder stand when a doe and a yearling walked out. Dad gave me the go ahead and I blasted the big nanny with a youth model 870 pump. Both of us will never forget the moment. Now a days, like this coming up weekend, I will have a guaranteed kill stand ready for him and all he has to do is pull the trigger. I work hard on setting everything up for him as sort of a "thanks for everything you showed me" gesture.

Only got to go with friends because my Dad only hunted squirrels, grackels, robins and yellahammers.

Climbing trees with home made welded climbers with only a bottom. Chest scares from tree bark. Using a borrowed shotgun.

Never seeing deer.

Never deer hunter as a kid. Hunted rabbits and ducks. First deer killed was later in life hunting with friends on private property. 110lb spike at 120 yards with an open sight M1A. Hit the deer in the lower neck and he dropped on the spot.
