Long story short, this is my oldest heifer sired by our bull. She is 17 months old and just about breeding age.

I can either...

A) Put my bull up for sale and bring in a new bull to introduce new genetics to the entire herd or...

B) Send my heifer to a lady I know that does AI (Artificial insemination) work.

Option B allows my herd sire to stay on the rest of the herd while she is carrying the AI donor's calf. Basically, I can breed my bull back to all my other unrelated cows one more year.

This LINK is the place where the lady has an account and buys semen so I can choose from any bull on the list. The camera icon at the end of their name will link you to a picture.

This is the heifer I'll be getting AI'd.

I don't really see anything that special about him. There are better bulls for cheaper on there in my opinion.

Yeah, he's old school blood lines. Not much demand for bulls that don't have more than 70" tip to tip of horn.

Every time I hear this I think of Jerry Clower's bit about "had to buy a new bull". He was the man!

They've figured out how to separate the semen by sex. It gives you a 90%+ chance at getting a heifer calf.

Those are both on my short list.

ETA: Especially Jet Black Chex. I had a black and white bull 3 bulls ago, but only one brindle daughter of his is still in the herd. I'd like to get some more black and white into the herd.

I like Tempter, Rodeo Max, and Shadowism in that order. Is that price just the straw cost? How much does she charge to AI?

Clear Win and Superbowl are my favorites.

Here's another one to keep an eye on that is making a lot of noise in competitive circles

Yes. That's the price per straw. Gotta play it safe and buy a couple.

As to our agreement about the service. It's not expensive, I'm getting hooked up because of other factors so it's not on par with the market. At other places it's $500 just to board your cow the couple of months before they even factor in semen and the service.

My heifer going to be synced with 3 other heifers/cows so more goes into it than just blowing semen up their puss. They hold them for 28 days to pregnancy check before sending them home.

I've never heard of this in any animal, I'm not a biologist or gyno by any means but does the female not have something to do with this too?

On a similar note, don't bulls blow on their first pump? I thought I'd read that somewhere.

Nope.

Males: XY chromosomes so can contribute either an X or a Y.

Females XX chromosomes so can only contribute X.

Males provide the sex/gender (further discussions regarding gender bending can be held on the OT or Poli board).
