On way to work before daylight. See a small 4 pernt hit by car but still alive. No mangled limbs no obvious signs of injury accept some missing hair.
Say you have a sharp knife so you dispatch the deer quickly to put it out of its misery.
Say you skin the deer and the hinds and the back straps look perfectly fine.
You chowing down?

You best believe it. I would turn it into curry so fast your head would spin.

Does a whale shite in the ocean?
Not if it's at SeaWorld.

I read somewhere that this was illegal, but that would be my only hesitation other than the effort required.

since it was still alive when you found it, unless it got an antifreeze enema on impact, that sumbitch should have gone home with you

about 2010ish, my buddy hit one near shenandoah on the way home from the bar. didn't think he killed it. we saw it the next morning around 7am. big doe. still there off the side of the road. it was in the 30s that night. we picked it up and cleaned.

If it was dead and still warm I'm picking it up

I've butchered a few roadkill deer. Discarded a few that were too busted up as well. Gutless method of processing works well here. But if the guts are shmoosed out of the stomach cavity and into the meat areas I give it the toss.

Absolutely no debate here
When I worked as a patrol man for 8 years I kept some 20lb ice bags and a skinning knife in my patrol car. Would work a lot of deer wrecks and always left with backstrap at the least.

People have smoked some of those monster BASF deer over the years, and green jeans or St Gabriel cops always end up snagging them. Gotta be quick with it. Load it up and GTFO

if you dispatch the deer and green jeans or the sheriff department checks you, there better be an available tag for the deer.
If not, there could be trouble depending on the officer.
We were at a deer / car wreck scene one evening - deer was suffering - bud was going to slit deer's throat - officer asked if there was a tag for the deer
could not believe it.

Graphic story...
Hit one one night...or more accurately, he hit me at the rear of an old International Scout I was driving.
The sharp edge at the end of the steel rear bumper caught him right in the chest cavity. Twisted the end of the bumper from forward facing 180 degrees to the rear. Was as clean a gutting job as I could do with a knife. Perfectly straight cut down the belly, all organs on the highway.
Just had to peel and eat. Craziest thing I've seen and I've hit a few.

fricking right he's getting eaten.
A few years back a coworker of mine hit a deer on the way to work, on the East side of Houma. He bought it home, skinned it and came to work.

I have a road kill doe in the freezer now. Made damn good sausage/ground meat/roast/strap.

My buddy's dad has done this on multiple occasions. He's your typical Cajun Coonass, doesn't let any food go to waste, ever.
