I'm not a bass fisherman. Are there people that actually catch that many big bass a year?

I wouldn't want anything as extreme as Forks slot but I would love to see a 20"-24" (pretty much 4-1/2lb to 9-1/2) *unless fish went 10+* slot limit on Toledo. Fish had to be returned to waters but could be weighed and released same day (for tourneys). I saw a couple of guys fillet a 7lb female full of eggs at fin and feather this weekend and it made my skin crawl. I literally grew up on that lake, I don't think it can be overfished, I believe fish were made to be eaten and I've taken 1000's of fish out of Toledo over my life but I don't see any reason anyone should ever keep a 7 unless a kid wants to mount it. I want my son to be able to chase toads in Toledo some day and we need to protect the fish on their way to being studs.

Thoughts?

The lake is exceptionally healthy and it has been because of the extremely high water we have had in recent years around the spawn that allow the fry to stay protected longer. TB does NOT need a slot limit. It's the best, healthiest lake in the country. It is currently being managed properly. Slot limits only work on certain lakes and in certain management situations. Toledo just isn't one of them.

And you can't allow them to be weighed and released the same day if you did implement a slot.

There is nothing wrong with the fishery. It's been rated number one bass lake in the US two years in a row. They have to be doing something right

And don't ghve me that conservation crap. The catch and release folks on Toledo will catch a fish, throw it in the livewell, ride around with it and anymore they catch for hours in a 24" livewell. They will then get to their spot to take a hero shot holding up some bass and then let them go miles away from where they caught them

I'm actually with you on the thinking that you have. I don't tournament fish and I don't live around the lake so I could care less about the negative impact it might have on the local economy.

Some tournament fishermen tend to act like entitled pricks on the water. The fewer of them out there, the more enjoyable my day becomes.

I think it could only help the average size of the fish. It has the forage base to grow alot of really big fish. It won't happen though, to many hands in the cookie jar

OP are you being subjective in your opinion? Everyone I've ever fished with or know who fishes TB throws big fish back. Hell, they don't keep most of the smaller fish they catch .
My point being, you saw one guy doing something you disagree with. Is there really a problem or are you just trying to impose your will on everyone else? The fishery is not just for you.

I don't agree with bow hunting redfish, but it ain't my fishery. Gotta let those guys enjoy it too as long as it's within reason.

My 3rd birthday was at a launch on Toledo Bend. I'm basing my proposed slot limit on the fact that people think Toledo bend is some magical place that will produce 100 - 10 pounders every year no matter what, what people don't realize is there was a very bad drought years ago that allowed the shrubbage around the lake to flourish. Then shad and baby bass had an incredible enviroment to grow. Now the lake has monster bass.

I'm asking if people would like to have a slot limit on our best fishery we have. There's a reason that every lake on Texas has a slot limit. There's also a reason why Texas has much better bass fisheries than Louisiana.

Lake Cat is a perfect example of where no slot limit can absolute ruin a body of water.

Fair enough.

I will say this, I spent last weekend hammering bass on SAM Rayburn. I mean it was nuts. My host and his fishing partner destroyed 6+ pound fish while I was having fun with 2-3 # fish. They threw everything back too. So whatever they are doing on SR working.

Or maybe I just got lucky.

Texas fisherman are much more conservation based than your average Louisiana fisherman. I take my limit of bass home every trip if possible, but I never keep a female full of eggs or a fish over four. Lake Cat should be a top ten lake in the country but as soon as it showed promise it was absolutely crushed,

I kept a few cause I don't get many bass. I usually saltwater fish. That said, I see why bass fisherman are so devoted and why you feel as you do.
I think attitudes will continue to change on conservation in this state. Be patient. The fishery will survive and damage can be mitigated. Just keep setting the example in the meantime.

I've had my arse chewed out by a bass fisherman for keeping bass. I've seen the same bass fisherman kill a button buck and a fawn that barely lost its spots in the same day. For that reason there, bass is my favorite fish to fry.

I keep my mouth shut and mind my own business. If it's legal then have at it. With that said we haven't killed a buck less than 4 years old on our lease in over a decade. We also produce a 150 class every year. Conservation is a universal philosophy.

It's all about preserving what we have brother. Get your limit if bass, i just don't see why anyone would keep a 6 pound bass when they could keep a 2 and give that 6 a chance to be a 10. I also believe that Louisiana should have stricter deer laws as well though. We could have potentially the greatest hunting/fishing state in the country if we played our cards right.

Interesting topic...good conversation.

IMO, There's always gonna be those fisherman, no matter the laws and rules, no matter what lake. I won't keep a fish that's 13 7/8" on TB, but there are plenty that will; I also won't keep & fillet anything over about 3 lbs. on that lake or any other, but that's just me. After fishin TB for so many years, I've kind of just adopted the 14" minimum, 8 per man, no matter where I fish. My dad was this way, it was the way I was brought up fishin, so that's how I am.

Some folks like to keep and eat everything they catch and they certainly are entitled to do so. If LADWF wanted to install a slot, I would respect it and it really wouldn't change a thing for me on TB.

Im the same way man. I just wish people would have more respect for the water. I would rather thrown back a 5, keep a 2 and hopefully someone will catch that 5 when she's a 10. Everyone wins in that situation.

Amen Solo, one of the most disturbing things I see on TB is the lack of fishing etiquette. I don't know when so many fisherman decided they owned the lake and everyone else is a visitor, but I see it every time I fish there. Trying to set good examples for my son so I use people's senseless stupidity as teaching lessons.

More times than not, I have people cut off my fishing lanes, or troll within a cast distance of my boat fishin and not think a thing of it. It's a big f-ing lake, lotta water, just give everyone some space right? Burns my arse!!

I had to get out of the truck and tell some jackasses in a bay boat to move off the ramp the other day when I was launching. I waited for them to move past but they literally trolled back in front of the ramp. Same guys were putting everything back in their boat while their truck blocked the ramp that evening. I didn't have to say anything as one of the locals tore in to them for being inconsiderate. I wish that bassmaster list never existed, you get some real clowns out there now.

I'm not foolish enough to believe I own any portion of the lake but it's disappointing how many guys that fish out there don't give a fuch about the lakes future. Not to mention the idiots that are on the boat road on any given Saturday now. Zero boating etiquette. Just makes for an unnecessarily dangerous situation.
