Would a mountain lion endanger someone riding a horse?

Please can you help me solve a debate? I was horseback riding by myself in N.M. and saw, from a decent distance, a mountain lion. It didn't try to follow, and I had two large ranch dogs with me.

Is it likely that a mountain lion would go after someone on a horse (assume no dogs)? I said I didn't think so, the ranch manager agreed but some friends say that is not the case.

Thank you.

Im no expert on mountain lions but id assume a mountain lion wouldn't. One may attack a horse that's sleeping in a pasture but not one ridden by a man

I'd say no.

People run coonhounds to tree mountain lions up in Montana. Rarely (but it happens) do they attack the hounds.

Look up Royal Tine on instagram, he's got some awesome videos. His dogs make my black and tan look even lazier than he is.

I doubt serious the mountain lion would do anything.

The horse however is a much different story. As soon as the horse caught wind or sight of a mountain...

Horse would go absolute ape shite and there would be no stopping it either.

Yes, I would be more worried about being on the horse once he smelled or saw the mountain lion.

You know the old saying, I don't have to run fast, I just have to run faster than you? Well, the horse has got you beat so don't fall off.

I've been on a horse twice when it saw a snake. I didn't stay on either for very long.

No worries on the horse or on foot.

I was sitting a waterhole during NM archery season and had seen a good bull elk across the canyon. He was pushing his cows to the waterhole. I could hear the elk talking and they were within 150 yards. All of a sudden, I saw the flash of a lion as he ran through an opening. The elk immediately shut up. They were in timber and I couldn't see them at the time, but I assume they took off.

Here in the states you don't have to worry too much about predators. Obviously, don't get between a momma bear and her cubs, but the normal wildlife isn't going to attack if it can run from you. Some people are deathly afraid of hogs but I've been VERY close to hogs, even before sunrise and they'll just run from you. Same with coyotes, mountain lions, and bears that aren't with cubs. They're all scared to death of humans. I wouldn't pull that shite in foreign countries however. F tigers and jags....

The frick? You have absolutely no way of backing that up. They track mountain lions horseback and on mules. Some (hell, most) horses may lose their shite. No way to say (with certainty) all would.

Jags want nothing to do with humans and are scared of them as well.

You been around many horses?

To put a mule and a horse together tells me you likely haven't.

Of course there are "some" horses that are mostly calm and would not lose it.

Most, however would.
