FORT SMITH — We’ve all heard the term “shooting fish in a barrel” equated to something so easy it should be illegal. In fact, it is. Shooting any game species except furbearers in Arkansas with the aid of traps isn’t just unethical, it can land you in some hot water with the law as well as the true sportsmen and sportswomen of the state. But that didn’t keep two poachers from cutting corners during Arkansas’s black bear season.

quote:

Officers returned to the site weeks before the opening of the 2019 bear season to see if the traps were still in place. Not only did they discover that they were still in place, but they documented two traps that had been “freshened up” with bait on at least eight occasions. Video and photo surveillance equipment were placed to monitor the areas and officers waited patiently for their efforts to bear fruit. They didn’t have to wait long, as the poacher posted to his social media account at the beginning of bear season with news of his latest kill. “Got it done again this year...Male about 200 lbs. Killed with a crossbow at 11:30 a.m. at one of my bait stations,” the post read with an accompanying image of the suspect and a bear. Of course, he failed to mention exactly how he “got it done.”

quote:

After a quick check of surveillance cameras, officers watched footage of the suspect walking up to the trap, shooting the bear with a crossbow and dragging it out using a tractor. Surveillance footage from the second baited trap showed another suspect walking up to the trap with a longbow at the ready.

Damn that’s messed up. Trapping them and shooting them just takes it to a whole other level of stupid.

As if baiting bears with popcorn and grape jelly isn’t good enough you have to trap them to shoot them.

Yikes

worthless trash for sure, but am i missing something?

the agents left the traps set and baited? So they could have prevented the bear being killed but wanted to catch the poachers in the act?

I think the dude left the trap. Agents just left monitoring equipment.

I’m not against bait stations but baiting them to a trap and shooting them like wild hogs is no sport at all. But anything for that social media clout I guess

Yeah I don't like that look by the GW.

They had the chance to prevent poaching but instead let the poacher commit the crime so that they could charge him for that.

Look at all the green jeans needed to take down two guys with bows...

If you are trapping for food I am 100% OK with it, legal or not. The government doesn't have the moral authority to tell you how you can feed your family.

I am not saying this guy was in the right, just seems like so many people are outraged by the trapping. I would 100% trap a deer if I was hungry, have you seen them out there? They are like cockroaches along the interstate at night.

they knew what was going to happen, they could have set up surveillance and activated the trap or taken it and just waited for whoever showed up to it and was on camera obviously upset. but whatever definitely a pos move shooting bears or anything except a hog like that.

ETA: reminds me a a case a few years back of some kid around CenLa/NorthLa who killed a spotted fawn and posted pictures with it and got in trouble.

They do a very shitty job of it. Typical government.

"Democracy" is a race to the bottom. When land management plans are drawn up, all stakeholders are supposed to have a say.

However the government takes your proposals, throws them in the trash and listens exclusively to stakeholders that grease the right palms.

I wish there were no bears. They’re only a nuisance, I know this is not a popular opinion nut just how I feel.

It probably is something along the lines of 1 instance of punishment is more punitive and memorable than 10 instances of prevention and saves more bear lives.

There are still other animals to trap. I don't agree with some hunting regulation, but by and large, a lot of them are supported by hunters and conservationists alike.

I don't know many scenarios where your family's survival would depend on it, but I am quite sure that scenario, and this scenario are not similar, just lazy asses that wanted to take the easiest path possible.

IMO the POS poacher bypassed that argument when posting it on social media "Look at Me" Generally speaking I would think someone depending on this to feed the family is not too worried about social media
