If anyone has any suggestions on which to get or brands that are good, please chime in.

I've used the Bosch 2.25 hp variable speed plunge/fixed combo, it's pretty solid. Plus it comes with a sweet carrying case.

I purchased a dewalt that has served me well for some hobby level stuff.

This one. That is one tool I would spend a little more money on for the first time around. Also look at tables. A good router table is a must that has a good fence.

If you are starting out, the Bosch 1617 is a solid, flexible choice.
Get the plunge kit with it and you can do most anything.

Portercable and you won't regret it.

Bosch, Dewalt or Porter Cable, can't go wrong with any of them honestly.
Can't really beat PC for value. Bosch probably has the best ergonomics and knick knacks.
I have a fixed dewalt, will be getting the plunging base soon.
