I am new to woodcock hunting, actually all upland bird hunting. I have a 9-month-old Llewellin Setter from White Rock Kennels in Waco, TX and this will be his first year hunting. I'm located in New Orleans and will mostly hunt within an hour or hour and a half from here (public land). If anyone could give me some general information (ie. places to go, where to park around the WMAs, what type of areas to look for, shell sizes etc.) My dog is currently with Ricky at Southern Tide Kennels doing basic obedience and learning basic gun dog skills (I highly recommend Ricky if you are in this area). The plan is to hunt him this first year and then decide if I'd like to send him to a place that focuses on bird dogs. Thanks in advance, I'll gladly return the favor.

Welcome to bird dogs and upland hunting. If you have facebook, there is a group called Louisiana Upland Dogs. You will probably need to hunt north of the lake. Woodcock can be found on most the WMAs. They eat worms so think moist soil, they tend to like thick cover where they can hide in the daytime. They are nocturnal and eat and migrate at night. If you put the dog on birds, the dog will be fine. Pointing dogs are probably 90% instinct with bird contacts.

Thanks, Wick. I will look into the aforementioned group on Facebook. I'll be hunting around the Pearl mostly.

Funny how that works. I actually plan on hunting a little further west than the Pearl WMA but I figured it's best to be less specific on a public forum...

While waiting for the season down here to open, take your dog to Kansas and hunt quail on Walk in Areas. It'll only cost you gas and a cheap motel.

Why is it so secretive? Pressure/competition?

It really isn't that secretive for woodcock. Most people I know will point out common spots to new people, then you have to work to find new stuff. The few quail that are left are an entirely different story.
