As a follow up to my question regarding fill material to horse stalls (thanks for the help on that one), is it feasible to use a wood chipper to make wood chips for the horse stall floor (in lieu of shavings)? We would be careful, of course, to avoid adding poison ivy, etc. to the chipper. But I don't know how fine the wood chips come out and whether they are suitable for a horse stall floor. Shavings are not that expensive, but I would save money in the long run, if a chipper is an option. If you can recommend a particular chipper, that would also be great. Thanks in advance.

call Asplundh and tell them you have a place for them to dump their chips. They will do it for free. Or Towndsend or another tree trimming place local like that to you.

How many horses do you have to warrant the possibility of buying a chipper to make horse shavings? Tree cutting, maintenance, time. I can't imagine how you can make the numbers work on this...

From what I can tell, the shavings my grandpa uses are much much thinner and softer than any chips coming out of a chipper I've used

This. I don't think they are the same thing. Not sure how the commercial shavings are made.

Sorry I wasn't more clear. We have uses for the wood chips other than just for the horse stalls. I just don't know whether chips are suitable for horse stalls.

Be careful inviting those fricks to dump chips on your property, some times they'll have chunks mixed in. And if the chipper blades are dull the chips will be long and stringy. A disc chipper will make better chips imo that that whisper (drum) chipper. I used to do this, we've had to pick chunks out of chips before.

I'm pretty sure dad would get his from the lumber/planning mill that was in the closest town to us. They were clean, no bark. Those chips from a tree trimming co will have bark, leaves/needles, etc. (dirty chips). I would not put that in a horse stall.

Ahh, so you're asking "how many chips would a wood chipper chip, if one had the chips to buy a wood chipper to chip chips"?

I don't know.

Btw, ToroTiger,, I think Toro makes a chipper..

Man, I was working in Eldorado, get a call from the Entergy man saying a home owner had spotted one of my guys shitting in their flower bed. I lost it, told the dumb frick if he had to go get in the chip bed. Good times, I didn't keep that job long.
