HAINES -- A Haines woman beat back a wolf with a ski pole but was unable to keep it from killing and devouring one of four dogs she was walking with during a midday ordeal near 40 Mile Haines Highway.
Hannah Bochart, 24, said she never felt threatened during the attack and said the wolf looked tired and desperate but determined. "She was making a wide circle, and she was able to move faster than us in the snow," she said.
From her family home at 39 Mile, Bochart set out on snowshoes at around noon March 5 for her daily walk across the Klehini River. She usually takes two family dogs, Mason and Tuphor, but on this trip also was accompanied by her sister's two smaller dogs, Okum and Little Bear.

I thought everyone up there carried a big daddy revolver?

Nah. This time of year there really isn't much of a need. Wolf attacks are extremely rare. Even the moose in S.E. are less aggressive than in S. Central.

What kind of dogs?
Posted on 3/17/14 at 11:13 pm to RogerTheShrubber
You'd think 4 dogs could fend off one wolf.

The excerpt says two of the dogs were smaller dogs. Still, if two dogs can't fend off one wolf, I'm getting different dogs.

Wolves are huge, powerful and can make work of several dogs pretty easily. The one that was killed was a husky mix, which is usually a fairly large dog.

I didn't think wolves were all that big.

The husky mix was also 16 years old. I'd bet money a couple of my dogs would have ripped that wolf apart.

wolves can get pretty massive

A Mastiff can weigh up to 220 pounds. Do you think a Mastiff can kill a wolf? I don't necessarily think so. But, the right dog with the right build sure can.

Bochart spotted a large, gray wolf...about a half-mile downriver. The wolf spotted them, trotted toward them a distance in a snowmachine track and sat down in the snow.
"I was going to give (the wolf) her space. I was thinking of protecting her (from the dogs), so I headed back (to the house)."
Alerted by a dog's bark, she turned and found the wolf had approached to within about 20 feet, although she had been looking out for it, Bochart said. "As soon as we saw her, she laid down.
Never, ever take your eyes off of a predatory canis-anything. The second you look away is the second they'll silently advance fast as lightning.

Holy hell, that's a beast. Wolves are pretty big, they take down Elk and shite, a few house dogs shouldn't be a problem for one.

Fwiw, wiki says the gray wolf is the largest wolf, and males average 100 pounds.

I think you'd be disappointed. I've seen a wolf chase off a brown bear. They are tenacious fighters. Wolves have adapted to hunt, and their teeth are built to crush bones. Large wolves can be between 130 and 175 lbs but are graceful and have excellent hunting and killing skills.
Wolf vs dog(s) isn't a fair fight.

quote:Me too. The comment I responded to made it sound like one wolf is taking an elk down. I might have read that into it, though. I'm exhausted. Brain not working 100%.

No shot.

Not really comparable, imo. Wild animals will avoid conflict if necessary to ensure survival. An injury can mean certain death in the harsh wilderness.
Properly trained dogs will fight to the death. The mindset is completely different.
Besides, as fierce as wolves are, they are built for stamina and working in packs. Alone, they are timid and avoid conflict.
This wolf was desperate and picked easy prey. I doubt she would have done the same had the dogs been different.
