Anybody know anything about wirehaired pointing griffons? I hear they're supposed to be good ducks dogs. Thinking about getting one within the next year.

Great dogs all around. I have multiple friends who have them for upland game out West but they also duck hunt with them. Good personality and temperament as well.

I've got my eye on a Cesky Fousek for my next duck dog as well. There is a facebook group dedicated to the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon that you might enjoy following. I haven't gotten too serious on tracking down a litter just yet but it is my understanding that it's not unheard of to wait 24 months for a pup...all the more reason to have one in my book. It seems like many of the puppies presented on facebook are imported from the original Czech lines in Eastern Europe. Best of luck to you. I'd love an update posted here if you end up with a puppy.

Do you know if they're as high strung as a german short hair? I'm not looking to deal with that much energy right now

My buddy's got into them because they hunt really rugged terrain out in Idaho and eastern Oregon. Evidently whpg's work really close to you in contrast to other breeds who range really far out.

There's a very reputable breeder in Mississippi and they have 2 litters due mid-november. The breeder is sending me pics once they're born so I'll keep you updated.

They are good dogs. However, pointers do not like to sit in a duck blind. They will tolerate it, but prefer to be out in the field. My GSP works my nerves every year when we have to sit for a while.

My buddy has one. Looks like a german wired hair to me. Didn't look like much of a duck dog but we shall see. They say the breed can do just about anything but Id say the temperment was more upland bird as the looks.

The griffon is more laid back than the wirehair, the wire hair is more laid back than the GSP, the GSP is more laid back than the pointer

I have never been around a Griffon but have been around GWP, GSP and English pointer, also extensively around brittany spaniels. I would argue that a dog being "high strung" is more dependent on the particular breeding the pup came from and the goals the particular breeder are striving to accomplish.

Do yourself a favor and visit the breeder of whatever dog you decide to get, and look at the parents and ask for references. It may cost some time and money but you will thank yourself when you avoid a crazy animal that so many people end up with when they don't do their homework

Griffons are way, way more relaxed than the typical pointing breeds in general. I do agree that it depends on breeder/line, though. I mean, a lab bred and trained for field trials acts quite a bit different than my lazy fatass lab who is from good lines but could lay around all day until we get near a body of water.

AS to a griffon in a blind: same thing. They're nothing like other pointing breeds (especially not GSPs) as far as that goes. They like to chill out next to their owner from what I've seen. Like I said earlier, they're used a lot in really rugged terrain for upland game because they like to work close to their owner instead of ranging far afield.

I have a Deutsch Drahthaar GWP and he doesn't stop moving ever. Not crazy wild, but just always moving, sniffing around. Loves the water and loves to retrieve more than just about every dog I've ever been around. He's right at 9mths old right now. I don't particularly like the long coat on the griffons, but they're great dogs from what I have seen and read.

I own a WPG. 7 months now, and damn is she a great dog. Great temperament, intelligent (too intelligent really), quick learner and loves the outdoors. Everyone is spot on about the time you have to spent outdoors with them. A lot of energy. If we're not outside for majority of the day, she tends to get slightly depressed. That may sound ridiculous, but it's true in my experience.

Here's a couple pics of her. They are rare. I was on a wait list for 8 months and then had her flown in from Iowa. Keep that in mind because it is difficult to find a vet or groomer that is familiar with the breed. If you have questions, feel free to ask.

I also have a WPG. He is 8 months old and has been at an upland bird dog trainer for the last two months. In the few reports I've gotten, the trainer said he was very smart and took instruction well. He said he has a good nose and loves to retrieve.
I am going to hunt some preserve quail/ pheasant over him this weekend and then it's off to South Dakota on the 30th for 10 days of wild birds. I will report back after the trip.
We may get an opportunity to do some duck hunting while there, it will be interesting to see how he switches from running the prairie to a blind.
