Long story short, Against my better judgment I bought my son an 870 express youth model last Christmas. He had a Mossberg 510 mini and even with the stock spacer in, he had outgrown it. Found a good deal on this one with Camo stocks and black barrel/receiver. We hunted Saturday in the rain and didn't have time to clean the guns until last night. I did wipe them down and blow the water out of them with the air compressor. Went to clean them last night and his 870 already had rust spots in several places. Took me an hour and 45 mins to get the rust removed, cleaned up, and back together. That gun isn't a fourth of what his Mossberg was. I completely tore down my semi-auto, cleaned, lubed, and back together in 20 mins. Seems like a pump gun should be much quicker and easier to clean up. This is the 2nd 870 express I've had. I sold the first for similar reasons. I guess I should've known better.

NB4: The wingmaster is better.

That is what I was going to say. My wingmaster doesn't have those issues.

Those pictures were right after it was completed. You should see it now.

Only newer Rem I own other than this 870 is a 597 .22 rifle. I've had no issues with it. I do have a 1960's-ish 1100 that still looks brand new and shoots great. It just seems that their QC and standards have gone down the crapper. I have several other shotguns of various brands but none of them give me any problems and I still shoot them all.

I am a little confused. Is it just the rust? If not, what's different about the Wingmaster that makes it better? I've only owned a Wingmaster. A very old 16 gauge.

I got my 870 express in '03. Might've cleaned it 3 times. One being after I used it as a push pole to get the boat off of a sandbar in the wax. No rust issues with mine. Must be some new shite.

I've had an 870 12 gauge since 1990. It's all I ever shoot. I love it.
A buddy in college told me "treat it like a whore and it'll preform like a whore... every single time."

That sounds like a maintenance problem, not a gun problem.

My old 870 has never not had rust on it. I believe the rust layer prevents further rusting.
