Was going to let my 5 year old try to kill his first deer this year. Was shooting an AR 15, but he's not consistent enough yet. Gonna wait another year.

So the problem is this. I don't like ARs. At least I haven't liked them, but the adjustability is perfect for young shooters. I'm thinking about building him one in either a 6.8 spc or 6.5 Grendel. Looking for opinions on barrel length, caliber, etc.......

6.5 Creedmore too

Least I was looking into one before I decided on the cheaper AR-10 in 308

The 140 gr. Grendel would be my round of choice if I wanted a hunting AR

6.5 creedmore would have to be the AR10 platform, right? Looking to stay with AR15. Probly forgot to say that. But yeah, the creedmore and 260 rem are badass

So that's another question. I don't see the 140 gr 6.5mm pills being mentioned with the Grendel. Was wondering if they created pressure issues in the ARs. Just funny that both the 6.5 and 6.8 are referenced in lower grain weights then their usual preferred weights.

I am a relative AR noob, if y'all haven't noticed.

Ever considered a 300 blackout? Excellent rifle for deer or piggies.

I did. Still looking at velocities and energy produced. Talk me into it.

Infidel,
I'm not a player in the AR game, but I've killed my fair share of deer w/ specialty handguns that gives me some insight. If the 6.5 Grendel doable in the AR 15 platform, I think it would make for a fine whitetail deer hunting gun. I've killed close to 30 head of big game w/ a T/C Contender using a 14" barrel chambered in 6.5 JDJ. My favorite load for the gun used a 120 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip bullet at a muzzle velocity of approx 2450 fps; my most distant kill was 325 yards (although I hit a little back in the paunch and had to make a second shot at 175 yds). 6.5 mm bullets have a well deserved reputation as being very deadly on big game. It looks like similar loads are available for the 6.5 Grendel.

Another good gun would be the 300 Blackout/300 Whisper (or what I have, a 300/221). All these are ballistic twins. My 12" barreled Contender has killed 3 deer, the max distance being 200 yards. A 125 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip at 2200-2300 fps muzzle velocity is a very good deer killer and has negligible recoil. When my son started deer hunting, I set up a Contender carbine barrel for him in 300/221.

I'm sure you'll have lots of good recommendations, but either of the two aforementioned rounds would serve you and your son well.

300 blk looks like 125 gr bullet in 24"barrel produces (roughly) 2500fps

The 6.8 should push 2800 fps with 120 gr bullet.

The 6.5 2700 with the 120gr

That's impressive. Now I wouldn't use a 24" barrel, but still looking at 2500fps in 16" barrel with the 6.5 and 6.8. The 300 seems to be better suited for subsonic loads.

6.5 Grendel. I've owned 2 300 blackouts in an AR platform and now I own a Grendel. Mine has an 18" barrel and it's extremely accurate. Like scary accurate. I currently have a red dot on it because I plan on carrying it through the woods while my 6.5 creedmoor is strapped to my back pack. The 300 blackouts were nice and did well within 200 yards but I wanted to be able to reach out farther if needed (kind of pointless now that I have a red dot on the Grendel). I haven't killed a deer with it yet but I feel like it won't be much different as for the effectiveness from my creedmoor. The creedmoor is a beast on deer and hogs, so I expect the same from the Grendel. If you're around Baton Rouge, you're more than welcome to shoot my Grendel and see how you like it or let your boy shoot it. Recoil is comparable to a 223 ar.

.308

They are relatively cheap and get the job done.

Is it legal to hunt deer in 5.56?

It works.

This^. I don't see any reason to get some super expensive round that is hard to find. If you're worried about recoil just put a big ole muzzle brake on it.

And if it concerns you too much just get a 260 upper or a 6.5mm barrel and you get a little bit of recoil reduction.

Remember, 260 Rem and 308 Win shoot from the same parent case (308 Win).

Other 308 parent cases:

22-250 (5.56mm bullet)
243 Win (6mm bullet)
260 Rem (6.5mm bullet)
7mm-08 (7mm bullet)
.308 Win (7.62mm bullet)

The parent case for the 6.5 Grendel is the 7.62x39 that has been necked down to 6.5 and Ackley Improved.

You can get a box of 20 100g FMJ Wolf steel case for $7.99 online at Alexander arms.

Ok. I'm kinda new to ARs. Not rifles or reloading. Ammo obscurity and price are relatively redundant as I'm gonna reload whatever I go with. Also don't want to build an ar10 and wouldn't anything in the 308 case family require an AR10 platform? That's what I'm understanding. Again, gonna be for a kid and want to avoid the extra weight

7.62 x 39 is good out to about 200 yards for deer and pigs....kids in our camp have killed multiple deer with it

I built a 16" 6.5 Grendel to use under 300 yards on deer and hogs. After reading about all my options I went with Grendel in the end because of availability of cheap steel case plinking ammo for less than $0.30/rd. I've seen several people state chronograph numbers of ~2450-2530fps out of a 16" barrel for the factory 123gr Hornady SST. You can get another 200fps out of a 24" barrel but I would rather have the short carbine setup over the extra 200fps. Wolf ammo comes out of the barrel like 6.5mm buckshot (2-3MOA with an occasional flier outside of that). My first 3 shots of Hornady SST made a cloverleaf on the target.
