I'm looking to take the girlfriend out for her first fishing trip this weekend and looking for some advice on where to go. I don't normally fish this time of year, so any input is welcome. The temp will be mid to upper 60's so more like spring than winter, but I wouldn't think the fish would fully transition into their spring patterns. I'm self-taught and still learning, so I could be wrong.

Areas I'm considering because I'm familiar with them:

1. The Rigolets/Lake St. Catherine - I could fish the main channel or intracoastal if they are still deep, bayous for medium depth or the lake itself if they are shallow.

2. Shell Beach - MRGO, Surge Gate, bayous, or lake?

3. Dam, bayous/marsh, or rocks?

4. Leeville/Grand Isle

Gonna need of pictures of your GF in a boat to see what type of fishing expeditions she’s ready for

I’ll check back later

All jokes aside, I don’t see it mentioned in your post, but they’ve been tearing up the trout and redfish out of myrtle grove

Look for shallower grass flats near deeper holes. You can find that all along the MRGO and ICW this time of year. The docks pilings on the east side of lake p could also turn on as the water temps get up.
Wherever you go, bring some jerkbaits. 17mrs and shadowraps have been very productive for me this winter

Id go to Leeville or Grand Isle. The Rigolets has been tricky for me to fish out of a kayak. An old timer showed me the way, once, but i never went back to try it

I fished that area after that major cold front a couple weeks ago and saw none of this. Water was disgustingly dirty from that pipleline, everyone was struggling. Didn't see one boat that was full of fish.

We hit our two man limit two days before Christmas and the day after Christmas we caught 36 between two of us. We weren’t fishing in the main canal though so I’m not saying you’re wrong

My advice is to take her in the marsh so she can sling a cork with a shrimp under it if it’s her first trip.

Or go to Slidell and fish for a couple hours then hit one of the waterfront restaurants.

I'm definitely going to get some live shrimp to increase her odds.

Hopefully we'll have to head home to clean a mess of fish, but this is a good fallback plan.

We’re catching them on artificial and minnows. Perfect 18-19 inch reds are smashing live minnows.

Anyone have a report from Port Sulphur recently? Deciding between there or Hopedale this weekend.
