In a dry box on the floor in my room. And some in my hunting backpack. And some in my blind bag. And some in my squirrel bag.

Somebody at work today said not to keep ammo in the safe. He said if there's a fire & enough heat builds up, they could explode & destroy the contents of safe.
Bullets almost can't explode - they can cook off, though. The problem is - where do you want your ammo in a fire? Inside the safe, it's contained. If you're just worried about pilferage, get a separate safe just for ammo, or, for a more cost effective flexible method, keep it in ammo cans and use a bike lock or something to chain them together (it will at least slow them down if they have to empty each can).
However, if you're worried about the ammunition in magazines or weapons stored in the safe, I'd spend your energy worrying about other things. The ammo stored outside the safe will likely cook off in a fire, while in a safe it might or it might not. If it does in the safe, it might damage items that would have been safe during the fire, so that's the only real downside.
I think it is prudent to not have chambered weapons in a closed safe (unless it is the one and only ready gun), because when the round in the chamber cooks off, the weapon will effectively fire. But, beyond that, I would not be terribly concerned about a few loaded magazines in the safe. You bought the safe for theft protection first, and fire protection as secondary concern, correct?

did some contracting at a facility that decomissioned explosives, ammo, etc.
would soak 55gal drum worth of cartridges in diesel and burn in a HUGE tray. ammo would split down side of casing when burned.
wharehouses fulla 55gal blue barrels of .40 and 9mm. up in smoke. lots from LAPD among other places.

Yep.
I have ammo stored in several places. My bulk stuff is in ammo cans in my closet. I have random assorted ammo on a shelf in my garage storage room.

Talked to a regional rep for ATK(Federal,Speer, CCI, Blazer) he advised that it is best to store your ammo in its original box. Rounds should not touch one another. It has to do with galvanic corrosion in dissimilar metals.
