We're going to be taking a longer trip targeting tuna out of Fourchon/Grande Isle this weekend. If we don't find any luck behind shrimp boats, we may try to run to a floater or two. Unfortunately, we haven't done so before, so I'm not sure how to find them all.

Any suggestions?

This is an excellent tool to use

luckily they're massive and you can see them from 15-20 miles away, that helps

See, I wish that over-layed a chart so that you could see the canyon and stuff.

Those are built by people without much interest in sharing. Do you have an idea of which platforms you'd like to hit?

Not really, I'm just trying to find our best options going out of Belle Pass or Grand Isle. I'd hate to run 60-80 miles and find the one we're running to has moved.

I'm thinking the canyon is just an easier trip.

I was wondering how often Rod N Reel updated their list, then I noticed that Deepwater Horizon is still listed on their floaters list....

Luckily floaters (floating production platforms) don't move very often, drill ships on the other hand move around a bit.

ETA; Looking at the link posted earlier stay away from the ones listed as drill ships and you should be okay.

It's less about the specific destination and more about just going out there and finding them man. The more people you can talk to who have been out in the last few days the better, but even then it's a dice roll. As hat noted, if you're in the general area you'll be able to see at least the lights of multiple floaters. Pick one an hope they're there. If they aren't head to another.

We're going to have some skirts with us and we're only going to be in a 28 foot boat, so I doubt we'll be going overnight. I'm starting to think we'll be better off chasing shrimp boats.

Thanks for all of the help, fellas. I'm thinking we're going to head out toward Medusa and see about hitting shrimp boats on the way out. I'm just not sure how eager everyone is going to be to push for 80 miles.

We had thought about trailering the boat down to Venice, but that just seemed like a lot when we can hit the edge of the canyon in 30 miles out of Belle Pass.

MC-582 (Medusa)
28°23'23.77"N
89°27'41.91"W

MC-809 (MARS)
28°10'17.54"N
89°13'36.57"W

From MARS you can see URSA pretty easily. Both in Mississippi Canyon 809.

There were also a few drill barges in that area not long ago.

I would think about staying around the rip and shrimp boats if your not staying overnight in a 28' boat. Medusa is not a bad run. WD 143 might be in blue water as well right now. Its always around the rip.

They are easy to recognize if you know what to look for, and you can make them out from miles away. Semi-Submersible platforms look huge on the water. They have 4-6 fat legs going into the water as opposed to the rector-set style legs. Also water depth has a lot to do with it. Get it to water more than about 1000ft deep and chances are that's what you will find.
