Look for a used smith and wesson 38. The 38s are generally less desirable and much cheaper than magnums. Still fun to shoot, but not as fun as full throttle thermonuke .357's.

Don't get anything compact. They suck to shoot. Most people can't hit anything with them and they hurt with wimpy .38 loads.

You should have no problem finding a used .38spl smith k frame service revolver in your price range. The old .38's are hard to break without pushing lots of +p through then.

You can buy a used great condition s&w model 10 on gunbroker for that amount. wonderfully built weapon with great ergonomics, beta tested for decades with billions of rounds. .38 special rounds can do the vast majority of what you need a handgun for.

I love shooting single action revolvers like the Ruger Blackhawk or Vaquero.

Look for .357 or a round that is a lot of fun is the .45LC

I really like my Ruger Blackhawk .357 mag. I have several wheelguns but the Blackhawk is my favorite.
