I have some machined wheels with some kind of residue on them. I can scratch it off but can't seem to find something that will clean it. I've used goo gone and CLR. Any suggestions?

that is some clearcoat-type shite that they put on them at the factory to keep you from having to polish them...eventually, the sun fricks up the clearcoat and they look like that...

spray some carbureator cleaner on it to dissolve it off...you will be suprised how good it will look.

you'll have to periodically polish them after that, though...

How long do I need to keep it on there? I tried it and some wd 40 as well. I was scared the carb cleaner would eat through any coating it had on it so I sprayed and wiped immediately and of course nothing happened.

Spray, wait 15 minutes, rinse off.

Nice. Thanks guys. I'm going to see if I can get new wheels through my bumper to bumper warranty but if I can't, I'll try this.

carb cleaner made it soften and curl up pretty quickly on mine...the only coating on your wheels is that shite that looks bad, so you want it to come off. most carbureators are made of aluminum, so it won't hurt those kinds of metals.

I would not try any other kind of paint stripper on them, as that would probably discolor the underlying metal.
