What/why herbicide is Weyerhaeuser in the winter?

September 8th I get a notice of aerial herbicide application in 6-8 weeks to an area they clear cut in early spring. I get the notice again on the 20th so that has them spraying as far out as mid DEC. So much for food plots I guess which is bs.
Why are the spraying this late into the year?

Did it say what chemicals they were spraying?
Maybe a pre for them to plant trees next spring?

It didn't. I would assume they would wait until early spring the spray, not middle of winter.

Probably arsenal. They are prepping to replant.

They showed up last year at a friends lease on the day they were planting. The helicopter used a plot for a landing /reloading area .

Between the yearly cost increases and all their bs, this is probably the last year I keep this place.

This. Has soil activity
They will plant in the winter

Yep, it’s imazapyr and it will persist in the soil for about 6-8 months giving the pine the next growing season to get a head start. Fairly common for them to spray in Nov and plant Dec-Jan while the seedlings are dormant, but they can spray up until the day they plant. Will be 15-20 no hablas in a van that show up when the rut is in full swing. Circle of life with Weyerhaeuser, the pendulum swings back the other way when they barely touch the place for 10-20 years.

2 years ago they sprayed our freshly cut clearcuts it took them about 2 hours...the heli would hover/land on the chemical truck...
Its not very intrusive other than they dont want you there expised to the chemicals while spraying...these guys didnt care...they said we could stay in our campers and never said a word when we came out to watch

Unfortunately Weyerhaeuser doesn’t care about hunting at all. They are a timber company and that’s the priority. The land leases are just a money maker until harvest.

Arsenal, it shouldn’t hurt your plots

Is that a joke or you being serious? I wish someone would have lead with that.
And for the guy saying they won't be back for 10/20 years they are clear cutting sections for the next two and thinning. They are going to be in there pretty consistently.
Also aren't they supposed to stay out of waterways and bottoms. Something about they can't impact natural drainage?

Smz…stream side management zones. They will leave a buffer around creeks.

That's what I thought. They cut directly through one in a bottom instead of going around. Used a grapple to build a 8ft high road with debris.
So will the herbicide really not affect the food plots or was that a joke. We are literally on the property right now trying to decide.
It appears that shite kills everything so I assume he was joking. Need more moisture anyway first.

Imazapyr is a broad spectrum but they are typically very good at where they apply it versus not with aerial spraying, they won’t apply in a strong wind and I’ve seen them hit both both sides of a road and leave grass growing on the edges. That’s more for their costs and your mileage may vary, a large plot that is recognized by them (i.e. someone paid timber value for it at some point) they will leave a buffer. An old log landing or lane that you planted, they’ll be less careful.
The logging company is contracted by Weyerhaeuser so if they’ve effected drainage, call your contact and tell them. We’ve had pretty good luck with them sending people out to fix roads they’ve left in terrible shape and replacing culverts they destroyed.
The equipment and cutting isn’t what bothers deer, they love a fresh clearcut, it’s the spraying that will get them to stop using a particular area. It’s annoying if they’re cutting small sections every few years but that’s not typically economical. A significant cost is getting the loggers equipment on site and pushing roads down to hard pack for trailers so they are going to take as much timber out as the market will let them. Thinning is the best thing they can do for you, the deer aren’t bothered by it and opening up the canopy draws more to you. They’re gonna thin once after 10 years if you’re lucky, maybe never if they didn’t plant high density.

Read up on forestry “best management practices” (BMPs) and if any were violated, contact your lease rep. The logger is responsible for that. I think Weyerhaeuser would be willing to listen if you know some specifics. Bring your concerns from a perspective of soil conservation and forest sustainability and not hunting. Their products carry a certification that the harvest methods follow these practices.
Let us know how it goes.

Unfortunately, BMPs are encouraged but not required. All voluntary

I’m aware. But Weyerhaeuser wood products are SFI certified. They care about BMPs. At the very least, it’d be a fun conversation with the right WY employee.

I will do that. To be honest there is a pretty large section of land where they made that cut through that is completely destroyed. I don't see how they are going to replant it. Even from a timber harvest standpoint doesn't make sense. There is a huge area coming out of that cut through full of wood that should at the very least be used for pulp.
