Recently bought a new boat and needing to put on a new prop. How do you go about determining what type of prop you need? 3 blade 4 blade? What pitch?

18' Xpress HD188CC w/ a 90 Yammer 2-stroke

TIA

Yamaha Performance Bulletin

Yamaha creates a Performance Bulletin for just about every new boat sold these days. Will give you a good starting point.

ETA: looks like they don't list your boat go figure

I would try a 17 P Turbo or a 17 P Trophy Plus. The Turbo is 3 blade and the Trophy is a 4 blade. Both will need the Flo Torq hub kit. I run the Turbo on my H-51 but am looking for a Trophy as I recently hear good things about them on the Xpress hulls. Xpress also likes a lot of setback so consider a jack plate if you are looking for the best performance.

You need to look into a PowerTech Reb3 3 blade 17 or 18 pitch for that setup. You will not be disappointed

Go faster with a 3 blade.
Better hole shot with a 4 blade.

Don't really think you need a 4 blade with an aluminum boat. You'll get up in a hurry with a 3 blade.

Contact either powertech or propgods. Both excellent sources of advice and fine tuning. Propgods will help a little more to get you into the right prop. Power Tech makes em, and isn't quite as helpful if you don't really know what you need.

Go to BBCboars like the others have said or email me at seapickle09@gmail.com
If yours is the stock prop its most likely a 19" powertec PTR 3 blade - its a general purpose prop that is crap.
There should me numbers/letters on the prop to tell you what it is. EX. PTR3R19PYM90 = powertec, 3 blade, right hand rotation, 19 pitch, yamaha 90
I have an xpress but with the Hyperlift hull and lots of time in trying different props and set ups.
With your HD hull, you dont ride on a pad so your performance wont be affected much by a prop like a pad hull would. Depending on the prop you have now, you may gain 1-3 mph and slightly better fuel economy.
There is a lot more to it than slapping on any old prop. If your rig is stock from xpress, your motor is too low which is robbing rpms forcing you to turn a smaller (slower) prop than you ideally could. Email me and i can explain it all but for the average guy just looking to wet a line, there are a few props out there that will do just fine
You dont want to start spending lots of money on the prop game with that hull

If you want to work your current prop, i can get you Biran @ holeshot propellers in houma, he does a lot of guys prop work from bbcboards and does all of mine. Great work

I have the same boat/motor. I like both the PowerTech 19 3-blade and the Stilleto 19 3-blade, both keep the RPMs in the 5,000 range. I find the boat gets up faster with the Stilleto, but is slightly faster with the PowerTech. Overall, I have a slight preference for the Stilleto.

You are on the right track but this guy doesnt have the hyperlift hull so his needs are different.

Trophy: i run this as one of my props. Good prop for the padded xpress hulls. This is an option for OP but not my first choice for him as it has lots of stern lift

Jackplate- you are right that Xpress hyperlift hulls like a lot of set back, NOT the HD hulls as there is no pad for them to ride on

OP would be best with a 4-6" manual JP to get motor height correct, not for set back. Set back changes the CG to LIFT the hull up further on pad.

OP, you need to get your hands on a yamaha pro series 19", i turn a 21" pro series and love it. lots of bow lift and 1-2 mph faster than my 19" worked trophy. also, find our 2 stroke's max rpms and that is what you want to shoot for with an average load in the boat. you adjust prop pitch and motor height to get to those rpms

10-4, just let me know, its pretty much a paper weight for me right now.

I did alot of research before i bought one, a 16P, and it was just a tad to small, so i exchanged it for a 17P, and the pitch diffenect was dramatic, but power tech only lets you exchange it once so im stuck with it. When i called powertech, the guy told me that the same "pitch" prop is never cast exactly the same.......

This prop has aft lift which was what I was looking for elusiveporpi@gmail.com

I would avoid Power Tech at all costs and order the Mercury Eco Enertia. Best prop made

I just got a 2016 x21 and havent even began to worry about the prop set-up. Right now factory I'm getting 55 MPH. When I get a little more comfortable with the whole bass boat thing I'll money around with it I guess.
