I have been throwing a cast net for a few years now, but have never really made my own bait balls. I have thrown Rabbit pellets before. I have been reading and found that some use Fish meal and a clay mixture. What does everyone here have the best luck with?

Pogie meal mixed with flour and a little water to make it the consistency of dough. Roll it up in balls about the size of golf balls and throw all around where you're castnetting.

Some people buy alpo in a can, poke holes in it and throw it in the water. I never found that it helps that's much. I've had better luck throwing in current when the shrimp are moving at night.

I have heard of people using Range cubes as well. I can find this local so I may give this a try.

Make sure they aren't the medicated kind.

Tops brand dog food. You can find it at most IGA food stores. You need something that sinks, most dog food floats.

nice haul. I'm wondering since you were in a boat that you couldn't have done that without any bait. Like, were you casting in a weir area or something?

I get my pogie meal at Thibodeaux's Feed Store in Abbeville.

But if the range cubes work, that looks like the way to go.

How much does pogie meal cost? The local feed stores have fish meal, but it cost $60 for a 50 pound bag.

It would've taken longer without the range cubes. If the shrimp are there, they're there. It was behind a weir where they were pretty stacked BUT the range cubes will start dissolving keeping the shrimp in a tight area. 35-45 shrimp a cast. I've casted before I threw out the range cubes and it was maybe 10 a cast.

makes sense. Thanks for the honest assessment.

Honest question- How do you know where the shrimp are?

Behind the weirs in the marsh. You don't just go out in open water and start throwing a net.

Although, I have heard of people going in the bay and sticking pvc pipes in the bottom about 20 yards or so apart and then baiting around the poles. Then just troll from pole to pole throwing a net. That way you can pin point where you had thrown bait.
