So I have a ditch that has some small crawfish and I want to promote growth and reproduction for a good bait supply. What would be a good and cheap food for them?

put some hay in there...the rest, they will get on their own. if you want to directly feed them, just throw any kind of old meat in the water...people use beef melt, fish heads, turkey necks, etc. for crawfish bait.

in fact, the most crawfish I have ever caught was around a dead cow in a pond.

Beef melt = spleen ... Go to local slaughterhouse or butcher and buy it

Purina makes a Crawfish Chow bait which is a large cylindrical pellet. Water temp will determine how long bait lasts and what food crawfish will eat

I haven't had tons of luck finding it.

LeBlanc's (now Rouses) carried it in the freezer section next to items such as tripe and pigs feet.

I haven't checked since they renamed.

Melt is less than a dollar a pound.

Put something in the ditch to hide under so the birds won't eat them.

Maybe cut a large PVC pipe in half and put some sections in the ditch.

I was wondering if they wouldn't leave with the next big rain.

No robles though, if there are some in his ditch, there should be plenty in area- for bait, anyway.

If you're near a rouses, go and ask the butcher. They usually have it. Be forewarned, that crap will stink something awful if left out. keep it in the freezer and cut small chunks off at a time.

Three down votes. Not sure if I should be offended or proud.

Kill a shite ton of snakes and throw them in the ditch or pick up road kill and sling it in there too.

Man do they ever love snakes. When we had pillow traps, if there was a snake we would leave it and next day it was just a skeleton and I mean literally a skeleton. They would pick it clean.

Buy an aquarium pump and a shite ton of tubing. Plug in and start making bubbles.
Crawfish need oxygen and warmth to molt. If they are in the ditch chances are they are eating. Maybe throw some straw grass. The stuff they sticks to it will feed the crawfish.
