Hoping to kill my first this season. Should I have a buddy on speed dial that knows WTH he's doing?

Hunting with .30-06, longest shot would be about 60 yds.

Shouldn't have too much tracking to do

Just put it through the rib cage. That deer is going to leave a blood trail like he was marking his path with spray paint

Or shoot through the shoulder, lose some meat, but the deer goes no where

I have only had to track two deer in my entire life and both were shot with 150gr 30-06 rounds. I have always shot 165gr rounds out of my 06 but i decided to try some 150s and quickly went back to the 165. The two were shot the same day and one was a doe at 225yds and the other a buck at 40yds. Neither shot left an exit wound and both deer were found dead. The doe had no lungs and no heart but ran 70 yards and I was lucky to find here because there was no blood. Buck ran about 40 yards and he had no lungs or heart left and also left no blood due to no exit wound.

I will say I have had to track more does I have shot than bucks. Not sure what it is, but does just don't seem to want to drop.

50%

Start where you shot the animal and go blood drop to the next blood drop. The more you do it you will notice things like scuffs on the dirt, disturbed leaves, or pools of blood where the deer stopped stood, or laid down for a minute to aid in tracking, but it's pretty straight forward as far as the idea of how to do it.

No reason you shouldn't pile drive 95% of them and have minimal tracking!

Oh and at that range if you shoot them high shoulder 99% of them will take a dirt nap right there.

Buy some flagging tape to mark blood AND DON'T PUSH/JUMP THE DEER!

I shoot a 270 federal premium bullet.

Tracked 0 deer with this brand ammo.

Tracked 1 buck with a 7mm-08 core lokt. Perfect shot through the heart. Puddle of blood 4 ft in diameter where he piled up. Ran 35 yards.

I mostly take the shoulder out.

Only deer I can remember having to track I either shot with a shotgun or a 45-70. Anything is hot with a 30-06 that didn't drop just didnt know he was dead yet and it only took a few seconds for him to realize it.

Through the lungs probably 40%
Through the shoulder- 0%

I've killed 3 quartering away with a bow with an off side shoulder exit and all three dropped on the spot.

Almost all. I shoot behind the shoulder because the shoulder roasts are some of my favorite parts. They usually run 20-60 yards before expiring, but with good ammo you'll have plenty of blood.

I had 5 does standing 30 yards from me last year, this one was the only deer that stayed after watching them for a minute. Quartered towards me...pulled the trigger on the 45-70, almost shite myself when there was no deer on the ground after I looked up. Bastard hooked a hard right and went about 30 yards into the woods before a small ditch folded it up. Mind was blown for about 30 minutes.

i know a 45-70 is more than enough.. i just somehow managed to lose the only 2 deer of my life with one. Shot a doe at 15 yds.. she ran and stopped at 30, i put another in her.. we followed blood for 4-5 hrs n never found that ho
