What is with the biting flies/knats?

I got drilled by them Easter Sunday in Bordelonville and yesterday afternoon I was bit laying out by the pool in Baton Rouge. My parents live close to St. Francisville and they have huge welps from the bites too. My ears are swollen and itch. One bit me on my eye Easter Sunday and it was swollen almost shut!

Why are they so bad?

I love to know whats causing them as well. Ive been told they are called buffalo gnats. We have had them terribly bad up in NELA the last couple of years. BAD

Skin-so-soft or some Victoria secret lotion stops them

We've got them over here in NWLA but not terrible. Skinsosoft works pretty good. I wonder if the thermacells have any affect of these dudes?

I have had plenty of knats dive bomb me and thought skin so soft was freakin delicious!! 99% deet will keep them off of you just like it does mosquitos!!! DEET DEET DEET

Got the Amber Romance spray from Victoria's Secret as recommended on this board and it does a pretty good job of keeping them at bay.
