What is the purpose of fantail on aluminum boat?

Ive always wondered, what purpose does fantail have? Is it only the obvious additional deck space?

They seem to only be popular in Louisiana.

I always thought it was for using push poles. Maybe just my opinion though.

As others have said it's for trawling to help with nets. However they are pretty damn nice for fishing off of, you sit on the motor stand on the fantail and it's a pretty comfortable place to fish.
