Show him the women in the outdoors thread.

I like the headlight idea. One of those pin on compasses would go over big with a 9 yr old too.

I was coming to suggest either of these. The Audubon guides are a great idea. Luck kid.

10, 562 rounds of .22 LR.
Or a simple sleeping bag, some kids that age are still hanging onto their kiddie ones and they need a bag for sleepovers or camping.
I am getting them for my 6 yo and 4 yo now.

His own bug out bag....
Not for leaving but all the cool little hit that goes with it. Water purity straw. Flint and steel. First aid shite. A fully functional bag is boss.
Gets him interested and learning.

If you are the cool uncle, you could give him his first beer and victory secret magazine.

The Field Guides are great ideas, especially if there are children's versions available. I gave some of my nephews a Knots & Lashings book, along with a couple lengths of rope, some parachute cord and dowels to lash together. One of them turned into the Rainman of knots. It was impressive, yet slightly alarming. (He hasn't abducted anyone yet. At least as far as we know. But, he's still only 12...)

There are also "kid's" US Atlases that give some good detail, but don't go overboard. Although by 9, I'd guess he already has one or has maybe even outgrown it.
