No knives or guns or anything like that, as I'm just the uncle and I'll leave that for the parents.

I'm getting him some of the Audubon Field Guide books (reptile and mammals) but I need maybe 1 other thing.

He is really into animals and nature stuff right now.

Any help?

How much you spending? Maybe some binoculars, or a backpack?

I don't know...$25?

I like the flashlight idea. Kid needs a good flashlight to go toad hunting at night.

Flashlight is a good idea.

Binoculars are good too. Kids love binoculars. I think cabelas makes some fairly cool cheap ones (20-30 bucks)

My wife and I made a "survival kit" like this onefor our nephew and he absolutely loved it. It's amazing all the stuff you can fit in a bottle and they'll like being to explore all their new stuff. We included things like batteries, thermal blanket, fire starter, a laminated map of the his family land for exploring, and even beef jerky and dehydrated fruits. The cool thing about making your own is that you can tailor it to the kid you're giving it to.

Dude, swiss army knife. Show him what each implement is used for properly. Compass, again show him how to use it. Headlamp. Pair of hiking boots if he doesn't have em. Canteen or a water bottle. Backpack. If you can or want to, buy a range finder. A map of where you teaching him the outdoors. GPS would be cool, again teach him how.
