Anyone familiar with West Bay WMA? Going to be camping at Chicot State Park this weekend and West Bay seems to be the closest WMA. Wanted to take the boy to shoot a few bushy tails. WMA description on LDWF site says mostly pine with some hardwoods scattered along streambeds. See some promising spots via Google Earth scouting, but any tips would be appreciated.

West Bay has good hunting and a lot of crazies!
You'll enjoy it though.
If you want a shorter drive, there's a lot of state owned "school board" property open to the public in Ville Platte and Mamou. Would have to look up the maps online

This for sure. Never hunted squirrel in West Bay because everyone said it was full of trigger-happy morons.

I'd like to know more about all this school board property, though. Never heard of it, and I'm from the area.

I was raised in Evageline Parish myself and would love to know where this school board property is? I knew of one small tract that existed but it was basically land locked my a prick with ties to local government so that's out. West Bay is flat out full of animals, including bushy tails. It is cut in huge blocks. It's been a long long time since I've been but I used to hunt the edges of mature blocks and cut over and do qiite well. The reputation is def suiting because rifle season is a war zone. This early in the yr is safe though. Put an orange hat on just to be safe and I'm certain that you'll enjoy yourself. Google earth it s d you'll see the lite tinnnnny bit of mixed hard wood left. You won't go without running into another hunter but it's not rifle deer season so everyone will be shooting up! Lol.

I grew up by West Bay but have not hunted there since I was a teenager. Wear hunters orange and you should be ok.

Should be? With orange on? While not eating nuts in a tree? No thanks, I'll pass!

I lived in the area for 20 years. I have never heard of anyone being accidentally shot by another hunter.

But go ahead and think the sky is falling.
