Looking to get a winch for my jeep soon. I have literally zero experience with them. You can't go anywhere without people acting like Warn are the -only- option for a man to own. I am seeking information that would dispel this as an elitist argument. (Any other name brands recommended?)

Although... if it's simply true that Warns are -that- much more reliable and tough, then spit that out too. Informative posts would be appreciated from any of you gentlemen that have put different ones through abuse.

A last thought... Fwiw: I know I want synthetic rope for the weight savings. However, I don't anticipate using the winch a lot. So, I am wondering whether the cost differential will truly be worth the extra coin to own a Warn. Gracias!

Smittybuilt, Superwinch, and Warn all make good electric ones, and Milemarker makes solid hydraulic ones. For synthetic line, keep it clean and put a cover over it once it dries

I had a Smittybilt on my Jeep that got used more than most people use their Warns. It never failed me, was super fast, and 1/3 the price of a comparable Warn.

I am about to put one on my 250. I can get an awesome deal on a M12000, but I will probably go back with Smittybilt.

Synthetic, awesome. I had both on two different Jeeps. I'll buy only synthetic going forward.

Eta, I'm not trying to sell you on smittybilt. Just giving my opinion that Warn is overpriced and others are just as reliable.

Warn is kind of like the Yeti of winches. Yeah they perform great, but you're paying for the name and can get equal performance at half the price.

Awesome news by all y'all. Thanks. I knew that there wouldn't be that many major manufacturers selling so many different winches if they weren't doing their jobs. Nice to have my OB endorse other stuff.

If the yeti analogy is true, that's about all I'll need NOT to buy warn.

Yeti analogy is great. But no need to precool your Warn.

Works great, has a great reputation, charges according.

Smittybilt, mile marker, others, learned from Warns R&D and aims to undercut.

Biggest thing with winches is to make sure your connections are perfect and your alternator is on point

Eta: Buy or build a winch kit

I'd find an older 8274 on Craigslist.

I have a 15 or 20 year old warn 12k that has been indestructible its whole life. It's damn good piece of equipment with lots of hours working hard.

I think it just boils down to what you're going to do with it. Get a warn if you're going to work the shite out of it. Get a smittybuilt or superwinch if you're going to lightly use it occasionally.

The bad thing about a winch is it only breaks when you're using it, and you're only using it when you're already fricked. Buy accordingly. If being fricked means you have to spool someone else's winch out to get your, that's not too bad. If being fricked means you're 10 miles away from navigable roads and the only thing they can get to you is a log skitter next month and a hurricane is coming, you'll want a Warn.

Last time I had a skidder try and pull me out, it didn't work so well. Damn thing slid right into a big ditch. Ended up with a stuck loaded down log truck, a stuck motor grader, and a stuck skidder

My cousin runs the quadratec and beats on it.

I use my viper for elaborate pulley systems to lift logs, it still works.

I've been thinking about both a quadratech model and a smittybilt. Btw since I got y'all on this... any quick MAJOR "don't do's?"

This just sounds like you are looking for a reason to confirm your decision to not buy a Warn.

I don't have any experience with any winches other than Warn. My dad has had Warn winches for over 30 years and never had any trouble with them. I have had a Warn winch for over 16 years and it currently sits on the third truck on which it has been installed. I can add a bunch of uncles and cousins to this list as well.

With a winch, as someone said before, you only need it when you truly need it. I don't mind paying extra for something I trust and know that it will last me for years.

Now, their grill and brush guards are another story. They are hideous.

Every commercial trawler I know that runs 12 volt electric winches on a shrimp boat run Super winch X2s. If that's good enough for people that make their living with a winch it should work out on the Jeep that you may use it on 3 or 4 times.

Pretty sure these 3 are all made in the same factory or share the same innards. Regardless, the industry has caught up to Warn. I had a smittybuilt with synthetic line and it never let me down.

Look at Smittybilt X20 Synthetic 10k.
Check Amazon often because they sometimes sell for $500.00
