The comment about it being like a lot of hobbies I think is good.

Truth is I probably spend about as much in my hobbies as a lot of horse owners do (assuming they aren't going crazy).

Yeah I got it now.

I was thinking of Dr Mazoch. I thought his wife specialized in equine but maybe not. But your posting and his personality didn't match.

will definitely get some goats too

Have and ex-fiance that mixed miniature donkeys with her's and it was all good. The little shits are surprisingly clean (dusty but clean), real affectionate, and bonded well with horse. More like big puppy dogs and they'll not tolerate (kill-dead) coyotes, which your horse will love.

Back to horses - like big boats - time, money, and fun. Not for a late riser, their day gets started with the sun.

Get a couple 4 wheelers.

Cheaper in the long run, more durable and they won't kick you in the grill if they get pissed off.

If you want a part time job with non-compensated expenses, get one horse. If you want another full time job with non-compensated expenses, get two or more horses. There's the farrier bills, unless you do that yourself, the expense of a shelter, feed and supplement expenses, worming expenses, vet expenses, proper fencing expenses, insurance, the cost of either baling your own or buying your hay, and the constant attention to their hooves as well as regular grooming. And no one has mentioned the cost of tack items. You are also grounded in the sense that you can't go anywhere for more than a few days if you want to or need to go out of town. Been there and done all that. Never again.

I owned and rode horses for about 15 years and absolutely loved it! In saying that if you want a good horse that is a pleasure to ride, goes where you want it to, and has a little fire, you have to RIDE IT! I mean 2-4 times a week, if not you will get frustrated because they will not want to listen.
To me I got into other things like Hunting and fishing more so I spent less time riding which made the cost of owning a horse not worth it. I do miss it a lot though and think about getting back into it but it is a big investment so the feeling usually passes lol..

It is a real expense as other people have pointed out and probably should be "your hobby". You have the land but you will also need:

Farrier
Vet
feed
hay
tack
truck to pull them with
trailer to pull them in
barn to stall
fence to keep them in.

If you good with all that then by all means do it. It can be enjoyable hobby.

Also, make sure you think about if you want to take vacations and things because somebody has to feed and take care of them while you are gone.
