Walmart is set to stop selling assault rifles, semi-automatic shotguns and other high-capacity weapons of the sort used in mass killings. The world’s largest retailer confirmed rumors of the move to pro-gun website BearingArms.com on Tuesday afternoon.
Walmart spokesperson Kory Lundberg told the site that lagging sales motivated the big-box giant’s decision rather than politics. “We previously carried modern sporting rifles in less than a third of our stores,” Lundberg told Forbes. “Our merchandising decisions are driven largely by customer demand. In our everyday course of doing business, we are continually reviewing and adjusting our product assortment to meet our customers’ needs.”

Wal-Mart Stores Inc (WMT.N), the United States' top seller of guns and ammunition, said on Wednesday it would stop selling the AR-15 and other semi-automatic rifles stores because of sluggish demand and focus instead on "hunting and sportsman firearms".
Company spokesman Kory Lundberg said the decision was not related to high-profile incidents involving the rifles, including the school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, in 2012. "This is done solely on what customer demand was," said Lundberg, confirming a report by business news website Quartz. "We are instead focusing on hunting and sportsman firearms."

I bet wal-marts volumes on AR15 sales are all the way up into 4 digits on a good year.

What about pistols? Those never kill anyone.

I know it seems skeptical but in all my years and all my Walmarts I've rarely seen anyone even browsing their gun selection, let alone handling/purchasing one. I'm honestly surprised Walmart even still carries guns at all.

Fook you Walmart but thank you for the $850 to $900 AR's I bought this week for $350

I don't see the big deal. They sold low end models, I'm glad they are handing their market share back to the thousands of smaller gun stores across the country.

If it really was a PR move they would at least admit it to get the full effect, Dick's and other retailers did. If there is anything you can trust in this world its that Wal-mart is looking out for their bottom line.

Sounds reasonable. Only a few stores carry guns and I've never even considered going there for one, the selection is sooooo limited. To be honest, I'm kind of surprised they are the #1 gun seller in the US. Obviously they have the locations, but I'm surprised they beat out nation wide sporting goof stores.
