I bought a basic Ruger American Rifle 30-06 over the weekend as my first deer rifle. I'd be hunting mostly flat land in South LA/MS

What are your thoughts on the new(ish) upgraded HP line for Vortex Diamondback? LINK

I'm looking at the 4-16x42. Plenty of great reviews on various sites. Anyone have first hand experience?

ETA: And I know nothing about rings...what would you suggest?

Not familiar enough with Vortex, so I'll leave that alone.

4-16x42 will allow you to mount the scope lower to the barrel which is more comfortable. The 4-16 part may be a bit overkill, also usually requires a parallax adjustment which to me is aggravating.

On, the rings and bases DNZ Game Reaper.

For that price I would go Nikon Monarch. Vortex seems to make a good scope but I've seen to many people have t send them back for clarity issues. They then rave about the warranty but I would rather have a product that worked.

All vortex everything over here.. Love their products and their no questions asked warranty / replacement policy.

Just put the same scope with dnz mounts on a savage 16 in 6.5 Creedmoor. I really like it. Haven't shot it yet but it seems like it's gonna be great

Are your DNZ mounts a single piece or two separate rings? Looking on Amazon right now and I am only seeing the 1 piece mount

I like that mount, very clean looking. Did it come with 8 screws? 4 for the rings and 4 to screw into the top of the gun? On Amazon, it only looks like 4 screws.

One piece bottom mount removes any potential from torquing the scope tube.

How are these votex scopes performing in low light conditions? That's my biggest complaint about my Nikon buck master 3-9x40 I can't see at the tail end of shooting hours.

DNZ mount

I like DNZ and almost got one for my Tikka. I went with an EGW pic rail and Warne tactical rings. DNZ has amazing reviews and should be perfectly fine.
