Voere Cougar 7mm Rem Mag - anyone familiar with them

My mom's husband and I were talking last month when they were in town about preferred deer calibers. I told him I have always used .270, bought a 7mm-08 for my son and am thinking about adding a 7mm mag for myself. He said "don't buy one, I have one that I would like to give you to use.". Its a Voere Cougar 7mm Rem mag. They are coming back down in two weeks and Mom said he has been cleaning it and went to range to sight in etc - excited about it being used. His health has limited his ability to hunt - mobility and has an O2 tank with him. Has not hunted in years but this seems to have got him excited about it again. I am going to try to get him to come sit a stand and hunt, we have some ground blinds and low boxes and I hope he will give it a try.
Anyway - any of you guys have experience with this rifle? Also, recommend me some ammo to use - I currently shoot Hornady Light Mag 140 grain in my .270.
Thanks in advance OB

Sounds like you are going to get to hunt with a cool Mauser 98.
Can't recommend ammo, haven't hunted with one in some time.

Since you're a Hornady guy...
They make a pretty good selection from 135 to 160 grain.
I've used the 154 grain SP in 7 mag for years with good results.

7mm Remington Magnum is my all time favorite round.
You'll see once you shoot it

Thanks. What ammo do you prefer and what range is your zero? I use 200 yds for a zero in my .270 because we have potential for some longer shots.

Barnes tsx 160 grain out of my 7 mag. Sight in dead on at 200 and it'll be roughly 1.5" high at 100. That's in my gun at least.

I had a Weatherby chambered in 7mm a long arse time ago. I shot 165 grain Hornaday all day. Had zeroed in at 200 as well but made many shots over that.

I killed two deer this weekend with a Browning BAR 7mag shooting cheap Winchester Super X 150 grain rounds. Dropped them where they stood. It's a bad mofo.

Checking the scope on my brothers 7mm mag once. The thing stood me up. Was leaning on the hood of a truck with the rifle on resting on a jacket. Man that round kicks.
My FIL's brother who is 5'6" 130 wet got one once. I told him not to shoot it out of a deer stand. He bowed up telling me he could shoot it with no problems. Told him whatever just don't do it. Well he was sighting it in and leaned over the handle bars of a 4 wheeler. Pulled the trigger and got scoped and it bloodied his nose just from the kick. He sold it the next day.
My FIL relayed that story, not his brother.

I have a 12ga single shot slug gun that will humble any recoil hardass.

quote:i've shot 3 1/2" Magnum Sabot slug from a 12 gauge crack barrel a few times. Yes it do kick but it's a different kind of kick than that fricking 7mm Magnum round.

Slug is more of a big shove whereas the magnum round is much more of getting into a head on collision

I've shot a few 7 mags. They're powder puff compared to this thing. It weighs a whopping 5 pounds.

A 3.5 turkey load out of an 870 or 835 is worse than any 7 mag I've shot

Ohh they have quite the kick for sure but I think it's just a different beast all together. That 7 mm Remington Magnum hits like you been shot
