My wife and I are close to buying a house that we really like. A couple of days ago, we go with the realtor to see the house. Everything inside is perfect and exactly what we are looking for.

I go out to the backyard and start looking around. I happen to look down and I see this ...

This is exactly what he looked like and exactly how he was posed, although this is not the actual snake. There is a large swampy area directly behind the property and about 30 yards from the back patio (no backyard fence). If these gotdamn moccasins are hanging out in the backyard in November, I can only imagine what it will look like in July and August.

My question to the OB is should I look for another house or is there something that I can put out in the yard to keep these things out? The yard is not very large.

Choot 'em and or start raising speckled king snakes.

Buy a bunch of King snakes and let them loose. If your area allows, guinea fowl are great at killing snakes.

I like to get a shotgun, get down on my knee at an angle and see how far I can blow them

Did you even read that jibberish before you posted the link? I'm looking for practical advice from posters here who may have dealt with this problem. The king snake suggestion that a couple of people posted might work, if the king snakes stay around long enough to get rid of the moccasins.

Well frick you then. Jibberish? At least I posted something with legitimate tips and information. Go round up some king snakes and let us know how it works.

The sight of a snake is causing you to reconsider buying a house? Were you born with a pair or are you transgender.

ETA: One snake in the yard isn't a problem, Finding a couple hanging out behind the toilet more than once would constituter a possible infestation.

We have a drainage ditch and woods behind our house. Saw snakes on occasion when we first moved int. Got 2 dogs for the kids and never saw anymore snakes in the yard.

Get a good pellet rifle and a dog you'll be fine.

Note: I'll admit it did worry me when the kids were 4 and 6.

Thanks for the advice. Like you, I'm more concerned about kids like my nieces and nephews playing in the backyard.

I would be more worried about the misquotes associated it than the snakes mothballs are supposed to work

Ohhh you were being serious, hate to break the bad news to you sport but every single yard in the state has contained a snake at some point. Unless you build a high concrete wall with zero cracks or crevices you will get a snake in it from time to time.

If you are bound and determined to be serpent free a continuous pouring of mothballs in your yard would work, however neither your neighbors nor your grass will appreciate the extra effort you go through.

PS: While king-snakes would work short term they would leave the area in short order after exhausting the food source.

Like others have said, they will be by almost any house you buy. Don't let it detour you from the house. Over time they may get pushed from their habitat has you encroach on it.
I live on the edge of the swamp and don't see them as regularly as you would think. I kill one a year as my dog has gotten bit once a year since I've lived here. I'll admit that it is now on my mind when cutting the brush around the ditch or when the rain water backs into the yard. They wouldn't stop me from buying my house. I don't have any advice on how to combat them besides my method of a shovel or shot gun.
