Venice is different, those dudes are a competitive and fiery bunch. The guides are used to taking city slickers and are trying to fill the box for reviews, I don't blame em, they gotta eat. Tuna trips are like what you describe until the guide trusts you, apparently they didn't think you could cut it. Don't blame them either.

We had a terrible experience with an inshore guide that we just about left on a rig in the marsh and drove his boat back. Finally told him to drive it back or we would.

I go out with Matt Miranda. Mexican Gulf Fishing Company. Last time I went he was running a 42' or 46' freeman. No complaints. He lets you fish and might have been more fired up than we were when the fish started biting.

Thanks for the recommendation. We were trying to go with Hunter at Paradise but we couldn’t make it work with everyone’s schedule.

Most do the hook set then hand it over, it’s easy for a rookie to miss fish and some days it might be one fish. On some days with plenty fish I am sure everyone gets in on the action.

that's bullshite. I fished with a couple guides who were intent on teaching you how to do it and having you do it yourself. Peace and Heavy are great at that.

Had an identical experience with Voodoo. Pretty sure the capt's name was Zach. Young capt and young deckhand that would just let us reel in and not set the hook. We were using way too light of tackle/drag too. Took us like an hour to reel in a 45lb YF, won't be going with them again

That a load of crap. I fished with Capts. Peace and Heavy in the past and they were intent on teaching you and letting you do it for yourself. Those two old boys with voodoo must not like tips or repeat business.

It wasn’t Zach.

I will say the owner of voodoo has made it right. He seems like a stand up guy.

Observation only, voodoo seems to have more turnover of deckhands and captains Seems as if after that reality show years ago, they’re riding that wave.

This. I'm not saying its right, but lets play devil's advocate. In Venice, a huge portion of their customers are "fisherman" but how much experience especially offshore with fish that rip large amounts of drag is a different story. Most guys "own boats" and most guys "have experience". I went this past winter and one of my friends kept telling the guides that. I just let it go, but the guides can't really listen to you they have to see you. Its hard to see you until you have fished for a bit and the bite maybe best in the morning.

In my limited experience and with common sense, they much prefer to hook the first couple of fish to get something in the cooler. That's what you are paying them to do. People want to say, I paid to fish...but most guys would much rather have some fish in the boat than tried and failed to hook fish and have nothing. The guide can't blame himself for missing fish.

Tuna also have hard mouths, so with a bigger fish you really gotta set the hook hard and deep depending on what sort of fishing you are doing.

I absolutely agree letting a fishing guide hook fish is very underwhelming for me also.

They own the boat
They own the equipment
You pay them a lot of money to go fish
They do the fishing

To make it simple, back up substitute that was not wanting to be there and taking it out on the customers. Nagging and chewing on the clients. Worst experience I've heard on the water be it private or charter.

Final straw, guy on front of boat is reeling in a red and the guide starts chewing on him that he was wasting his time by casting in the wrong spot and not setting the hook how he wanted it. Guy gets the fish on deck and guide never stands up and keeps chewing on him. Fuses got lit then.

Similar to the “my dog is trained” statement heard by Every waterfowl guide.

Owner of the company agreed and has made it right. Can’t wait to give it a go again.

It might be nice to edit your OP to let people know that the owner made it right. Glad to hear it was a good resolution and hope your next trip is awesome!

Group of us went with voodoo on a bachelor party last February. Two boats. It started out as you described, them hooking and handing to us to reel. As they started hitting the surface, they baited and handed us the rod. We couldn't keep up. Limited out both boats by 2pm or so. Great experience, can't wait to go again.
