I know I want a 18-20 foot bay boat for marshes and occasional trip out in the lake on a good day. I clearly said I have zero intention of purchasing a boat beyond 21 feet.

How the frick am I being narrow minded? The op asked an opinion and I clearly stated it. Would you like me to repeat it? I just don't want the op to buy a 19' boat and then regret it
The boat isn't for YOU it's for the OP. It would be one thing if you or anyone asked what the op would be using the boat for and gave feedback based on that. But to just make a blanket statment that that particular size of boat is not good seems kind of silly to me.

Those are pretty much all bay boats.

You asked ME this on page 2 homie

You are really going to take the position that a 19 ft bay boat isn't worth owning? What size bay boat is worth the investment then in your opinion?

I can think of but one application where I would really ever think about cutting across a large lake or bay. I wouldn't mind being able to launch at the Rigolet's and cut across Lake Borgne to Biloxi Marsh. Have always just launced at Hopedale or Rigolets so never really thought it over or attempted it.

Looks like they would perform well in a lake but how do they perform in the flats? Not sure its the type of boat I could see a 5 year old in.

Ok. I missed it. My mistake.
Look Bourg. No need to get all pissy. You are just dismissing an entire class of boat because it wouldn't work for you. I get it. That doesn't mean it wouldn't work for the OP.
I think I remember now. Don't you fish out of a 24 foot Nautic Star? Your dad's boat if I remember correctly. Pretty nice rig. I think you posted pictures of it.

LOL you're the dude who freaked out at a first mention of a boat larger than what the OP said he was considering. I came here to make sure the op knows what he is getting into with a smaller sized boat and what he is limited to as far as fishing various spots and various conditions. That is all. Peace

I fished that weekend with a 10 and 7 year old. We fished out of fourchon and ran out to the rigs real quick and it worked out very well in the slight chop.
It was much drier than the usual bay boats I've rode in before.
Also if your going to spend 32k I'd go for lots of test drives.

I just looked again to make sure. I didn't see any bay boats.
I'm not trying to be a smart arse here. But do you know the difference between a bay boat and a center console?
I'm sure they are good boats and all.

If I'm missing it, please explain then.

Bourg
Didn't mean to come across as freaked out. I thought I was quite measured. But peace.

Maybe one day I will want to be able to fish the areas you speak of. At that point I will probably choose to buy a diff boat. So far in the past 20 years or so I have greatly enjoyed fishing the areas I do fish. I would just prefer to have the option of going out when I feel like fishing. My FIL never wants to fish on a weekend which greatly limits when I can fish as he is retired and I am not. Thanks though.

There is nothing wrong with center consoles. I've fished them but there are differences.
They lack a front casting deck or rear casting deck for that matter. They have higher side walls, wider gunwhales, usually steeper V hulls, aren't usually equipped for trolling motors, heavier gross weight, and generally draft more than a traditional bay boat.
Generally they have a better ride in rough water than a bay boat.

Look man, Im not trying to tell you what to buy, just making sure you are aware of the limitations that arise when you have a smaller boat. Good luck let us know what you end up with.

The boats he listed did have a surprisingly low draft for being a CC. That's why I was curious if he fished the flats in one.

Having fished most my life out of a 14-18 foot boats I know Im not going to take on the high seas in a 19-20 foot boat.
My main goals are to:
1) Fish the areas I fish now more comfortably namely the marshes and trestles and causeway on good days.
2) Be able to take my son fishing as he grows up
3) Be able to fish on the weekends.
4) Catch redfish and specs
5) Take in freshwater lakes on few occasions.
6) Not spend large amounts on fuel to tow and run the boat.

We fished the fourchon beach?
Also the only dealership on the gulf coast is in Tampa and one of the only things to do is fish flats there.
In my experience it's a bay boat. It meets all the criteria listed above.
