(UPDATE) OB Mechanics and ZTR experts assemble

I have a Kubota ZTR. Runs fine when the blade is not engaged. When I engage the blade (but sit stationary) the entire mower vibrates and the engine speed drops. When I start to move, the engine speed drops way down and the mower will only move about 10 feet before it kills. Any suggestions? The fuel filter was replaced about 2 months ago. Also while it was doing the this the engine backfired a couple of times.
**UPDATE**
Looks like it was bad gas. Poured 1/2 a can of seafoam into the gas tank and ran it for a few minutes to get it to the engine. Shut it off and let it sit for 10. Cranked it back up and it ran like a champ. Thanks for all the help!

sounds like a bad muffler or a bad accelerator pump in the carb. Or maybe the governor has somehow come out of adjustment.

pto clutch wouldn't do that. It's either engaged or not. Motor will not bog down when it's engaged.What motor is on the mower?

How would I check this. 2 weeks ago the throttle lever was sticking to the point I couldn't get the mower to start because the lever wouldn't move. Sprayed some WD 40 on it and it worked fine for a week. The lever moves freely now so I know that is not the problem.

Have you checked the blades to make sure their clear and there's not some electrical cord, hay rope, fishing line wound up in them?

Yes. Once of the first things I did was check the blades.

My Kubota runs the deck off of hydraulics so I'm not sure if your smaller one does this or not. Do you have a hydraulic pump that could be low on fluid?

The blades are belt driven. Checked the belt and it looks fine and doesn't appear to be loose.

Water in fuel, trash in carburetor jet/s? My godevil would run great in the yard, but wouldn't pull the hat off your head in the water/under load - I had trash in one carb jet. If it has manual choke see if it will run half choked or so.

This has happened to the kubotas we use at work multiple times. Anything from fuel filter, to fuel line, to blown cylinder
Also lift your back hatch and check the screen that covers the fan. If clogged it will do that

Had a similar issue with my John Deere 717A after 10 years. It turned out to be the plugs. Replaced them and it ran fine. In addition to checking the blades for something wound up, I would also take the belt off and make sure that all the blades are spinning freely.

Sounds like something is binding up between the engine and deck. Have you tried turning the blades by hand? Did you hit anything? Any zerk fittings need to be greased?
