lets see, what could go wrong with this? 200 + degree barrel, -150 degree air...
It's a heavy barrel and there isn't much coming out of the can...so not much. In order to cause the kind of damage you're alluding to, the barrel would need to be hotter and dunked in an tub of ice water. A little fogging won't hurt it.
BTW though, it isn't CO2 in those cans (at least none that I know of). It's the same stuff used as coolant in air conditioning systems. It does come out as a liquid...but that's irrelevant, it isn't water and it won't oxidize (rust) the barrel.

the magnum calibers are to punishing for 5 shoot groups.
Brotha, you aint kidding! My shoulder feels like a tenderized porkchop right now.

lastly, speaking of magnums, you can shoot out a barrel putting too many rounds in row down it. A buddy of mine's dad ruined his 7mm Weatherby magnum shooting a couple of boxes through it in less than 30 minutes.
Thanks for the advice

I'm pretty sure it's CO2 because it is really only supposed to be used as compressed air. The reason the ice comes out is because a compressed gas becomes a liquid/solid. I doubt they would put freon in a can made for blowing the dust off a keyboard.
But I do agree with you. A heavy-barreled rifle should be just fine. My dad's 300 also has a bull barrel on it.

it's not the barrel per se I am worried about, its the lands and groves. where that super cooled liquid touches could make it brittle. bad, bad idea.
compressed air from a compressor.....maybe
tub of ice water = 33 degrees, wouldn't hurt anything. still wouldn't douse a barrel that is to hot to touch in it though.
Would you heat up your hunting knife where it is to hot to touch and then spray that super cooled C02 on it's edge?

Bapple: LINK
ReelFun: I see what you are saying, but I still maintain there isn't enough mass of coolant to cause the kind of rapid heat transfer necessary to heat treat the rifling.
Regardless I don't want to start a pissing contest about the contents of keyboard cleaner cans and their application for firearms metallurgy
Thanks for the feedback guys.

Very interesting Cpt! You learn something new everyday on the OB.
Does your rifle shoot stoned-MOA?

Cpt,
Congratulations on your "new" rifle! Glad to see it's shooting so much better. The first 4 shot group looks to be around 1" at 100 yds. The other groups are ok, but not as good. Of course, that's to be expected as the other groups were also different loads.
Re: barrel twist, the Remington factory 300 Win Mag barrels are 1:12". That should be ok w/ bullets weighing up to 170 gr. Your gun should shoot 165 grain bullets well, but only time will tell. LINK
My personal practice is to shoot 3 shot groups, saving on time and $$. I don't personally think a gun's accuracy will deteriorate significantly w/ a hot barrel, as long as the gun/stock is bedded well. OTOH, as already mentioned, one can shoot so many rounds in a such a short time (especially w/ a gun like the 300 WM) that one can damage the lands and grooves.
Next time you go shoot your "new" gun, take your 22 LR w/ you. Take a break from the WM and go shoot the 22. This way, you'll rest your gun barrel AND your shoulder.

Mine is 1/10, so it's good for the heavier stuff. Great link though!

Yes indeed. Plus 22LR is a great cheap way to work on my mechanics, which of course need work.
