Uh oh: Ford compromised safety by omitting a part on F150 extended cabs

But how do the other versions of Ford's best-seller hold up? Given that even less popular versions of the F-150 still sell more than many other vehicles on the market, the IIHS put an extended cab through the same battery of tests. It performed comparably except in one area: the small overlap test. In that case, the extended cab model's steering column was pushed eight inches into the cabin (dangerously close to the crash test dummy's chest), the dummy's head missed the airbag almost entirely and hit the instrument panel, and the dummy's legs would risk sustaining "moderate" injuries.
The reason for the disparity is that "Ford added structural elements to the crew cab's front frame to earn a good small overlap rating and a Top Safety Pick award but didn't do the same for the extended cab," according to the Institute's chief research officer David Zuby. "That shortchanges buyers who might pick the extended cab thinking it offers the same protection in this type of crash as the crew cab. It doesn't." A Ford spokesman responded: "We addressed the IIHS small overlap front crash in our high-volume SuperCrew first, which accounts for 83 percent of 2015 F-150 retail sales. We are adding countermeasures in the SuperCab and the Regular Cab in the 2016 model year. Based on this IIHS data, both vehicles offer similar occupant protection levels." .

There was a long thread on the OT about this not long ago. Did they do anything about it yet?

Looks like they are doing something about it next year.

The crash bars on the crew cabs are in the way if you plan on installing 35" tires. Some of the F150 forum posters have already removed them to make room for tires. Probably not a good idea but to each his own.
SuperCrew F-150s come standard with a pair of what Ford calls “protectors” in front of and behind each front wheel. IIHS for this photo painted the added elements red and yellow.

No, junk is the rest of the crap on the road. Support America and capitalism by buying a Ford. Built without your tax dollars since 1903!

Remove the reinforcement that keeps the front wheels and tires from crushing your legs so that you can install bigger wheels and/or tires. Genius.

Not the first time.
My brother-in-law had just bought a brand new F150 in 1996 and within 2 days off the lot the check engine light came on...took it in...good news: it was just a faulty light
bad news: Not a single bolt holding the Cab to the frame. gravity and that's IT. Ford pampered him quite well for a while. But he never drove a Ford again.

at my calculations- 35% higher than all other american made motor vehicles and even "imports" like toyota or nissan.

1996 was 19 years ago.
That also seems like a tall tale.

Capitalism at work baby! Market will determine the fair price. Apparently people are willing to pay for their products.

I guess you could say they are just as safe as the Super Cab & Regular Cab owners that Ford didn't bother to install the crash bars

I'm keeping my 35s whatever

Maybe this is why Elmers Island keeps sucking them down?

If these bars are so important, why doesn't GM or Ram include them on ANY of their trucks? Sounds like Ford F150 screws are leading the way in safety.

Already saw that thread. I did not delete mine, but can easily and safely explain how I would. Don't want to dump more money than necessary into a 3/4 ton when I am about to step up to a dually.

You don't understand economics. True patriot? Want something built in the US?
Better buy a toyota or nissan.
Least amount of chinese and mexican parts. Most amount of moneypaid to the average american working man.
So sick of this buy american shite when the product isn't manufactured here.
