Is ethanol free gas worth using on a boat motor? Should I use higher grade gas? I have a 2019 mercury 150 and I’m not sure if it’s worth using a special type of gas or just regular.

What are the positives and negatives of the different types?

Absolutely. It’s all I use for everything except my vehicles. Chain saw, blower, 4 wheeler…

its absolutely fine as long as you use it regular and not let it sit for months. just try to burn it all up before parking the boat.

i have always been using ethanol gas in my outboards for years.

i start adding fuel stabilizer (seafoam) to the last trip or two when fishing season is almost done

Ethanol free 87. I don't want ethanol on my outboard, even though my boat never sits for more than 2 weeks at a time.

I try to use only ethanol free gas when filling up the boat. Unfortunately not many gas stations carry it and I get stuck in a pinch if I need to fill up before launching in the AM.

If you use the more available gas options containing ethanol then you want to add a stabilizer such as Sta-bil .

This is from a Merc dealer who is the mod at BBC:

quote:

Fuel Selection:

Make your fuel selections based on the following criteria, IN THE FOLLOWING ORDER:

-High Traffic, Top-Tier (Name Brand) Fuel
-Appropriate Octane Rating (see above info)
-Lowest possible ethanol content (NEVER to exceed 10%).
-While it may be preferable to utilize a fuel that contains lower (or no) ethanol, use of fuels that are SUBSTANTIALLY higher octane can result in decreased performance, decreased fuel economy, and potential for carbon buildup. Higher octane fuels burn SLOWER and COOLER.

This list makes me feel good about the 87 Octane non-ethanol fuel at Bridgeside that I use. Those 4 engine catamarans are making sure the tanks turn over frequently.

I just wonder if additives are important for 4 strokes. I mean, most people don't use them in their cars, so why a boat engine? I still buy Quicklean and Quickcare from time to time.

Most use cars daily. Boats can sit for weeks allowing the alcohol to separate from the fuel.

My ski boat with an I/O I use ethanol and try to run it low on gas and add stabilizer to the rest at winterization

Outboard I use non ethanol but I still run a 1996 mercury V6 2 stroke. I hope that engine never dies

I’ve used 87 octane pump gas for most of my 30+ years of boat ownership with carburetor & injected 2 stroke engines, except for my last boat that calls for 89 octane(Yamaha 225 SHO). Never chased ethanol free gas, but always filled my tanks after each use.

Most people don't need to for their daily drivers. I have a truck that can go weeks between start-ups, so the fuel is always treated with Stabil 360 at every fill-up. Same with boats and any small engine that sees infrequent use or seasonal storage, I put Stabil 360 in the gas for my yard equipment during the season then flush with Echo or TruFuel canned fuel before putting it up for the winter. Never have issues with my stuff starting and I never have carburetor issues. Same with marine engines, you are fine with E10 if you are burning it and not letting it sit in the tank for weeks/months at a time. Even non-ethanol gas will varnish and have issues if it sits long enough, just won't have the possible corrosion issues if it really sits for a while.

I use ethanol gas in everything. 4 wheelers, boat (inboard), and lawnmower. My boat will “diesel” if I use ethanol free gas in it. I use an additive when my stuff sits for a while, usually put it in at the end of the season. Then start it in the spring with the same fuel that was in it from the fall. I use a battery weed eater and leaf blower now but I use to put ethanol gas in those too.

Modern Outboards are perfectly fine with 10% ethanol. It's usually the tanks and fuel systems that have the moisture problems. I only run REC90. That's what they have at the Marina.

Stabil 360

Evidently this stuff works great. I've had my generator stored in a scaulding hot pump shed with E10 gas and marine stabil in it for over a year. Started on 2nd pull and ran just fine a month ago.

I think slam full tanks is the most critical thing with long term gas storage. Minimal space for humid air in the tank seems to help a lot.
