I love watching the shows especially when they are in the mountains or foothills or the scenic prairies. Places and animals I'll probably never get to hunt. However, all these shows have 1 thing that I absolutely hate. Whispers! I find whispering the second most annoying sound just a tick lower than mosquitoes around your ear. Every damn one of theses shows whether out in the field or in a shooting box / blind have to narrate in a whisper. Why can't these guys just roll the footage and go with a voice over narration? I know it takes a little more production time but hell they are editing in those set up shots where the guy or gal is sitting there replaying the hunt to you anyway. Am I the only one?

As someone who has dabbled in videoing, you need the field talk to make it more real.

I am opposite of you, I don't like voice overs much at all.

Lapel microphones make that whispering sound much better though

ETA: I don't like the staged feel to hunting shows and thats what most voiceovers do for me

Whispering doesn't bother me. I can't stand the "fixing a plate out of foil trays back at the lodge scenes). Every damn hunting show has this scene. I don't know why they think we want to see this.

These are the reasons I don't watch hunting shows. In this order:

1) Cut In Shots: When the camera cuts away from the action to show a close up cut in of the finger knocking off the safety and closing around the trigger. It makes me throw up in my mouth.

2) The Fake Camraderie: If I have to hear: "My good buddy" or "man, this is great fellowhip" or anything like that for the 27,000th time, I will turn it off. Sitting around the fire. Picking the guitar. Michael Waddell is the absolute king of that cheesy crap.

3) Fixing Dinner/Driving Down the Interstate/Getting Bags from the Airport/Driving up the Driveway. Unless you are going to Inner Mongolia where the trip is actually most of the point, then it adds nothing. Like, I don't want to hear about your 14 hour drive from West Point, MS to NW Kansas. I know. You think it makes you hard core. It doesn't.

4) Them taking a 127" whitetail on Day 5 of a 5 day hunt, just to get a kill on camera, and then acting excited about it.

5) The shot of the deer laying on the ground from the angle behind the deer. But pretending that the guy is just walking up on it for the first time. That's awful.

So, yeah. This response sort of got away from me. I pretty much hate everything about hunting shows.

But like the OP, I enjoy seeing new terrain, and exotic animals. Considering all of the above, Jim Shockey probably does the best job for my taste. Which of course won't be everyone's cup of tea.

Nope, you nailed it. Vast majority are promoting the lodge/outfitter/product over focusing on the actual hunt. They're glorified infomercials.

I've yet to see any outdoors show that I can stand to watch for more than a few minutes. Hate them all. The only half way decent one I've ever seen was the nuge and some other guy blasting herds of pigs out of a helicopter with full auto rifles.

I don't even watch hunting shows at all any more for all the reasons No Colors listed plus some others.

I'm just ready for October to hurry up and get here!

this all depends, I watch a lot more YouTube shows than anything on Outdoor/Sportsman so many times that 125" deer is a great deer for what the guys are hunting. But I get what you're saying

I expected a lot more downvotes.....

People love them some hunting shows.

Sort of on topic: I spent the weekend with a friend who is a big Ole Miss fan. About a year ago he and I were watching some hunting show. And Michael Wadell was cheesing it up. And I was like: Turn that douchebag off....and he was like: "Man, I am really conflicted about that guy. I used to worship him. He seemed so genuine and cool. But then I found out that he had been cheating on his wife. And they got a divorce. And then it turns out he's a total a-hole to everyone who works for him. And they all hate his guts. Can you believe that?"

And I was like: "Yes"

And then this weekend he was telling me that last Mon night he had been to the Memphis meeting of the Ole Miss Rebel Road Show. And how Hugh Freeze had so moved the crowd that almost everyone was crying at the end of his speech. And then all the allegations about his personal life broke. And he was like: "Man, can you believe that?"

And I was like: "Yes"

My favorite is when they show them "finding" the deer and it's stiff as a board and obviously been dead for a long time and start talking about how fantastic of a shot they made.

frick a hunting show. I do wish I had made some hunting videos back when we were running dogs though.

Nothing is worse than someone turning to the camera and sayign something like "I SMOKED EM!" when it was an obvious terrible shot

Heartland Bowhunter is one of the best out there

Bowhunt or Die (Youtube) is great too; high quality and mostly self-filmed

MeatEater and Shockey are about all i can watch. Also Growing Deer TV, but would really only consider it a "hunting show" during hunting season. The majority of their show is about land management.

MeatEater is the best though. If he goes on a bear hunt, he isnt going to kill a bear just for the show. He wants to kill the right bear. and if he doesnt see the right bear, then that episode ends without a kill. shite i feel like we have been waiting several seasons for him to get a Grizzlly Kill

So much junk now the only ones I would watch are the ones that have squirrel hunting with dogs or hunting rabbits with beagles. They can't "FAKE" these!!!!
