Tried to get my mod choke out of 870 with no luck yet. That suckers is stuuuuck. Read a bunch of articles saying modified is acceptable for turkeys, just limited range. Anyone else do it?

I would just pattern the gun to find out...

fwiw, you may want to try lightly heating the end of the barrel...

It doesn't make a difference 80% of the time. Both turkeys I've killed this year I could have killed with a red rider.

Modified will work. Only thing I'll say is if you do shoot one get to him quick because he likely won't have a ton of pellets in him. I've seen em get up and run off and it's heartbreaking

Just find a load it likes. I wouldn't sweat it.

If you can't get it out that isn't a huge deal but you will need to establish what your max range is and DO NOT extend it if the bird hangs up. I would think with modified 25 yards would be my max but you need to check it with your gun and round.

Is it really THAT critical? I'm no turkey hunter, but I've killed lots of shite with a shotgun. You probably can't find a load that isn't effective at 35-40 yards with a regular ol modified factory choke. Every turkey load I've ever seen was HOT.

I always hear about turkey hunters stretching out to 60+ with super extra double magnum full chokes and some 1900fps bazooka shells. Why is it so hard to kill a turkey? The damn thing is all head and neck b

In my opinion it's very easy to put a sub lethal shot on a turkey. You can't just "nock it down" and retrieve in many instances like with shooting a duck or dove.

Think about shooting paper with a modified choke, you can easily hit the paper, but how much can you get in a head and neck equivalent?

I am not saying it can't be done, but I don't like having to chase a turkey or miss or loose one. So much of turkey hunting is getting them close and watching the show.

It's not complicated, as long as you know the distance at which you can make a lethal shot it can be done with a 410.

Take quart bottle and fill half way with 0w synthetic car oil. Stick it in a corner and put gun down into it and rest gun upside down in corner for day or two.

Fair enough.

I just feel like I could pulverize one at 40 yards with anything in my gun cabinet. Like I said, I'm no turkey hunter. I've just shot lots of stuff.

There are lots of combos that won't kill turkeys at 40 yards.

I'd shoot a modified out to 25 yrds max. And that's assuming I was comfortable with shooting the pattern beforehand.

(That's why I shoot a 10ga with custom Nitros and a Jellyhead)

Id be pretty confident with a baseball at 25 yards. I don't understand why it takes 150 #4's to the dome to kill a turkey.

You'll be fine. Shot my first several with 20 ga. modified Citori. 3" #4 inside thirty yards will stone em dead. You'll kill more with your set up than the super extra full nitro rocket blaster red dot scope folks. Your pattern is the size of a man hole cover, while rocket man's is the size of pie plate.

frickers are tough. I shot one through the heart with a .30-06 at close range. Pretty much blew the chest cavity off. Damn thing got up off the ground and flew 20-30 yards before he cratered.

You can't.

Just so that I understand what you're saying here....you're saying that a pattern the size of a pie plate is too small to hit what you are aiming towards (I won't say aiming at, because obviously a 9" kill zone is too small for ya)?

I've been doing this all wrong. And here I though my 7mm pattern with a rifle was pretty good to deer hunt with. I wonder if I can equip my .280 with a modified choke and #4s?

You mean, unless someone can manage to fit that head into the 9" kill radius they have. That's a pretty tall order, but I reckon there are a couple folks who can basically shoot a rifle inside a pie plate at 30 yards with a red dot scope....cause in essence, that is exactly what they are doing.
