Lower ball joint is usually the culprit. I changed uppers, lowers, and tie rod ends on my truck last weekend. After 170k+ they were done. A c-clamp won't cut it. Rent a proper ball joint press (with extra adapters) and do it right. The wheel shake test won't help you unless the joints are near failure, mine had no play and was showing just slight toe-out. If the boots are cracked or the grease has leaked out and let any amount of water or dirt to get in they'll have to be replaced. Spend a little extra money and get some Moog parts too.

+1

Replaced my sway bar end links over Christmas and happy I went with Moog - some very rugged parts.

Fellas, just took it to break check. Got it up on the lift an the wheel has got play it it when you wiggle it back and forth. It's the upper and lower Tie rods. These guys want to charge me $600 for the rods and the alignment. Thoughts?

There is only inner and outer tie rods. Total, I think they should be $150 for the parts. On one side, it would maybe take you an hour. Taken both out at the same time, like connected together. Pop outer out, and unscrew inner

I thought that would be more clunking than speaking, but I guess it wouldn't hurt to swap them out

Match up the lengths of the threads between new and old, and you technically won't need an alignment.
